I have a 12psi electric pressure cook and I am wondering how long it will take to sterilize my half pint jars

I have a digital pressure cooker and I put my BRF cakes on high for 45 mins and mine did fine. I'm not sure what the psi is for the one I have. Everything I have read online and watched on YouTube said use 15 psi.

gee whiz at 12 PSI I would think at LEAST 60 minutes, but I'd say closer to 75 minutes. I always did PF jars for 90 minutes at 15 PSI, but the general conclusion around here seems to be that 60 minutes at 15 PSI is sufficient. Good Luck!

30 to 45 minutes after reaching 12 psi is fine for 1/2 pints. Be sure to leave the vent open at first to vent steam for a few minutes before closing it to build pressure. RR

Thanks! That worked well. Does it matter that my lids still make the "click" sound? Thats because of the holes right?

i use four or five series of 15 minutes boils . letting an hour between them. it is what Tindalization is about.
supossedly spores of bacteria open up in those 1 hour letups and get killed afterwards with the next boil..

Why? That's way more work.

yep. but it supposedly guarantees better sterilization which is what matters. it is not really much work , only time ..
it is taken from a biology book on growing bacteria strains.

You'd use tindalization for whole grains, if at all. It is totally unnecessary for the pf tek.

anyway tindalization is not much more expensive than plain boiling. it is easy just patience..

I doubt 15 minutes is even long enough for the substrate to reach boiling temperature. Not to mention an hour in between isn't long enough for endospores to germinate which is the main purpose for doing it like that.
I don't think you'd have any problem with the standard methods. Sometimes sterilization gets blamed for contamination when there are actually other causes of it.

i meant 15 minutes of boiling water killing bacteria . and you can let it rest more than an hour . the exact time depends on ambient temps..just until the boiler gets warm.
any way i do it like taht you can keep doing your thing..

Tyndallization How to Sterilize without a pressure cooker
If you dont have a pressure cooker (PC), or cant fit your substrate jars inside your PC (thats me), you can use a sterilization method called tyndallization. Its a little faffy/time consuming but really keeps those contams at bay.
Tyndallization involves steaming your jars for 20mins, three times, on three consecutive days. In-between steaming, let the jars rest at room temp.
Basically some bacterial spores can survive high temperatures, but the heat shock will make them germinate - now they're vulnerable to the next steaming session.
Even late germinating spores will be killed-off during the third steam, leaving your substrate contam free : )
I like to steam for 45mins on the third occation just to be sure!
Happy growing

That'd be silly to do for PF jars. You don't even need a PC for them. 90 minutes of steaming should give you 100% success.

pf jars dont have bacterial spores or what ? bacterial spores are more resistant than bacteria.
