why can't I maintain humidity?
    #1915664 - 09/14/03 02:23 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

I just hooked up a cool mist setup in a rubbermaid container. I got the Holmes 1230 cool mist with the circular wick filter. It was set to operate 30 mins on/ 2 hrs off around the clock. I increased it to 30 mins on/30 mins off. I sealed up the cool mist outlet except for the one for the hose. I ran the hose through the container and poked several holes in it to distribute the air and humidity. I cut a hole at the bottom and covered it with 4 layers of coffee filter for an outlet. I also put a few moist perlite jars in for good measure. I misted several times before I put in the PF cakes. Even with all this, I'm only maintaining 66% RH. Any ideas on what to try? Thanks in advance

hygrometers aren't the most accurate measuring tools.

agreed. As long as you have some condensation on the walls, you are fine. u might want to just use perlite as your humidification source. it's cheaper and a lot more effective (imho of course)

yeah, I figured the hygrometer wasn't dead on. I do have condensation on the walls due to misting.

To others who use a cool mist: do you see condensation inside the tube leading from the humidifier? I realize that the moisture is diffused, but I've heard some people mention condensation that drains back into the cool mist.

I see condensation in my hose even to the point of large water droplets. Those need to be drained either into the terr. or back into humid. The water droplets block air flow. I just use the cool mist with a small amount of perlite and I have 93%. Also when you open the container to mist you let a lot of humidity out. The cool mist drops are so tiny you cant even see them condensing on walls.

i just put down a inch layer of perlite, with about 1/2 of not less of whater and it works perfectly. be careful though, my last grow i had TOO much humidity and it killed all my cakes... :frown:

I have some bad news for you.  :frown:

None of the wick style humidifiers will get much above 80%.  You bought the wrong type of humidifier.

The problem is that there's no standardized naming convention in the industry.  The cool mist you want is the type that uses a rapidly spinning disk that sucks up and flings the water at a fine comb.  This atomizes the water into tiny droplets.  Another type that works well uses ultrasonic sound to atomize the water.  They're all variously called "cool mist" so it's hard to determine exactly what to get.

Thanks Diploid! I finally got to the bottom of this one. I'm going out tomorrow to but the right cool mist. In the meantime, do you think there was any harm done to the cakes? They have been in there about a week in this condition.

They're probably alright. If they don't pin soon, you can try dunking them overnight in the refrigerator to rehydrate them, then try fruiting them again.

Good luck!

They might be a bit dry is all. Give them a good dunk and they'll be fine.
