Building a new computer
    #19241353 - 12/07/13 02:53 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I haven't kept up to date with what's good and what's bad in about 5 years in the world of computers. But I'm in the need of a new one, mostly for gaming. My current computer is kinda dying and it's getting out of date. Some basic specs that I remember about it off the top of my head is 3.1 GHz tricore AMD, 6600 4 gig Radeon, 8 gigs for ram, and I forget my mobo... it's shitty though. Micro ATX and the USB ports are going bad. Some of them don't work.

My budget is around the $400-$500 mark. I'm broke, but I know that it could probably get something that's an improvement over this.

Could anyone point me to reliable components within this price range?

Well I see that a quick search instead of a new post would've solved that. Thanks for the links.

Yep. This gets brought up a lot as you see.. it's probably easier to look through what other people have done instead of us recommending the same things over and over again

But put a list together and run it by us

At that price I think you'd be best buying a prebuilt desktop.

Thanks, I'm planning on picking out some parts. I'll come back with a build.

You really think though that buying a pre-built one would be good? I want it to do some gaming. I'm not planning on running BF4 on ultimate settings... but I'd be nice to have a nice computer to play some CS, LoL, and down the road, ESO. Also, it's just fun to build them on your own.

I wouldn't normally ever recommend a prebuilt especially for gaming purposes. But 400-500 is pretty lowball for a custom build.. you could build something somewhat decent but you'd have to cheap out on core components, which I never recommend. At that price, your best bet is looking around on Craigslist or similar, for slightly used gaming PCs people sometimes sell for cheap, 400-500 should be able to get you something decent if you look around.

Now if you could up it to ~700 you'd be in much better shape. If you want a good gaming system at the best bang for your buck it's probably closer to 1k-1200. I'd go with something along these lines personally at that price - http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/best_bang_buck_PC_2012 - written almost a year ago but still quite relevant. Unfortunately I suck at putting together custom system that are less than 700. But if you get a cheap case/mobo and go AMD/ATI on GPU and CPU, and don't get an SSD.. you could do it.

But I'm gonna recommend an Intel CPU because they run ridiculous circles around AMD currently, although AMD is always cheaper http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

Yeah, I didn't think it'd be a good idea.

Well, in that case, would you recommend waiting longer before building a new PC until I have some more money? Somewhere around the $700-$800 range? I guess from peeking around, it may just be worth my money to wait.

I picked out some parts that were a little outta my price range. I can't purchase it, but how does this build look so far?

I'm going to pick some parts from my current PC like my SSD and my DVD Drive.

Looks pretty solid. Personally I'd go with a Western Digital drive over Seagate.. but that's just me. I've had bad luck with Seagate drives.

Nice to see you picked a solid PSU.. most people like to go cheap on the PSU (bad news).

R9 270 2GB.. meh. If it's anything like the R9 280.. those things run hot as FUCK, people are seeing like 95c under load and AMD says 'that's acceptable operating temp'.. yeah acceptable if you want to fry your GPU in under a year. Also the 2GB of VRAM. If I were to buy any card right now I would recommend one with at least 3GB of VRAM, just for current and future games. 660Ti 3GB or 670 4GB would be a good choice, but that's a bit more. But they also are much more power efficient and run WAY cooler.
