The Fungus Fair blew my mind

So yesterday was the fungus fair, and my by god was it awesome. Despite being a terrible year in our area due to lack of rain, I had a great time. The MSSF was there giving microscopy lessons, there was a Chinese Medicinal Mushroom table where I tasted me first wood ears. The psychedelic society was there taking about active mushrooms. There were arts and craft stations for the kids. There was an awesome toxicology table to familiarize folks with deadly mushrooms. There was an extremely well staffed identification table including a few of the authors of the new California mushroom field guide. There were of course mushrooms for sale as well as grow kits, and all the mushroom merchandise you can think of from mushroom dyed yarn, to paintings, to prints.
But the best bart was the food!
I got to eat my very first truffles! I had black truffle butter on a cracker, and it was one of the most delicious things my taste buds have ever encountered. I also had mushroom barley soup with six types of mushrooms in it, including chanterelle, shitake, and oysters to name a few.
There were a few demonstrations, like how to use mushrooms as dye for yarn, or how to make paper.
There were several food demonstration, one guy made a bunch of latin food with mushrooms instead of meat. Mushroom cactus salad with crimini duxelles. Tacos with chanterelles, peppers, onions and cilantro. Crispy carnitas made from oysters tacos. And chanterelle squash pupusas. Delicious vegetarian mexican food? WITH MUSHROOMS!? it was hella good.
The last food demonstration was just as delicious. She sautéed the chanterelles with butter and then added port and sliced pear. I went back for 18ths. This dish literally melted in your mouth and the flavours complimented each other so well I couldnt even think straight. So delicious.
AND FINALLY! She made pasta, a heavy cream and parmigiana sauce WITH A VILE OF TRUFFLE OIL, and then SHAVED TWENTY WHITE TRUFFLES OVER IT! I cannot describe the flavor, but it was decadent. I hovered around the bowl till it was empty.
I really enjoyed the fair. It was wonderful!

I knew lichens could be used for dye, but I had no idea they could produce those gorgeous brilliant purples. I may not yet be enough of a nerd to join the California Lichen Society, but one day...
Also the boy who was explaining spore prints was so adorable!

Sounds like fun, I wish they had stuff like that around here!
-------------------- Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here. ------------------- Have some medicinal mushrooms and want to get the most out of them? Try this double extraction method.

No, got there too late. Flipped through the sample books for a while though and talked to the people at the table.
