I'm curious...

has anyone else come across the Wine Cap growing on poop?

It seems that cow patties are the only substrate around here that I have found them...

I'd love to know if anyone else has come across this?

ya, I think that's what caused a lot of problems with ID'ing but microscopic investigation confirmed that it is indeed S. rugosoannulata

That is completely fascinating. I wish I had useful information to add to this thread.

I found some last spring growing from horse dung.
I also found a huge Agaricus growing on the same dung heap.

Wine caps will grow on straw just fine, and horse shit contains plenty of not too thoroughly digested straw.
