whats growing on top of verm.?
    #1925215 - 09/17/03 03:21 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

ok, i flipped my pint jars last week, to get more air exchange to the rest of my jars. i let them sit a few days then flipped them back over. now, i flipped them over today and it had shrunk to like 1/4 of its size. there is alot of head room in that jar. but, before i flipped one back over i noticed something growing on the top layer of verm. i thought maybe cobwebs, but i opened a jar, and in the open area on top there is something growing! it has fluufy white patches and two finger type things are growing up. is it mycelium trying to reach to the top of the jar to grow on? can they be pins?(they dont show any type of cap). or is it cobweb. i dont think its cobweb though because it isnt the grey color and really doesn't have the same characteristics of cobweb. anywho i flipped them back over on their tops so whatever they are they are mashed now, but i have a feeling it will grow the same thing on the other end too. it is pure white and it looks really clean. anyone have any suggestions or maybe pics? thanks

HERE is a pic of mycelium strands growing through a casing.
ANOTHER picture of mycelium coming through a casing layer.

Yours will not look this defined, probably more fuzzy than anything else, perhaps something like THIS . But you will see mycelium poke through the verm. layer. And yes, it may reach up, usually along the glass.

Substrate also starts shrinking when nutrients are being used up.

If you read the PF tek very closely, you will see that it states there can be fluffy mycelium throughout that top layer of dry verm. I've had that in all most every jar I've done!

How many times do I have to tell you, I was running through the woods and tripped on some mushrooms!!! Well, at least I'm not lying.

Awesome. I meant to ask this last night... I did not open the jar.. i just took off the band while firmly holding down the lid to look at was was going up there around the threads and noticed fuzz in the tiny crack between the verm and the top of the jar and i became terribly frightened and marked the jar as a possible contam, turned it upside down so the weight of the cake would "mash" the contam, and put a plastic bag over it to keep spores from floating out of the innoc. holes and into another jar's holes... scary stuff... heheh

I promise to live, love, exist, and be, and hope that all life will love to be in existence with me. Also, fuck you.
