How I do Grains
    #19249756 - 12/09/13 11:51 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Ok nothing new here just my take on the whole grain prep.
WHAT YOU NEED
GRAIN I use Meijer Wild Bird Seed (Red and White Millet, Cracked Corn, Black Sunflower Seeds)
DISH SOAP
PELLETIZED GYPSUM
BREWED COFFEE
WATER
STOCK POT
PRESSURE COOKER
QUART JARS W/ PREPPED LIDS
ALUMINUM FOIL
WIRE MESH STRAINER

INSTRUCTIONS
For 6 Quart Jars of Grain I measure out 3 Full Quarts of WBS and Place in a Strainer.
Then I Place a about an 1/8th tsp. (approximately) of dish soap on WBS and rinse until the water starts to run clear (Dish soap works as a wetting agent)
Once the water runs clear I dump the grains into a Large Stock pot and pour about a half to a whole pot of brewed coffee into pot, and then cover with tap water about 2-4 inches above the grains.
I use my hand strainer to remove MOST of the floaters which are the sunflower seeds, husks, straw, etc. I stir this a few times from the bottom to get most of this stuff out.
Then I add about a 1/4 cup of Gypsum to the Grain Water and stir then cover with a lid and let set for about 12-24 hours.
After the soak i move to the stove and set on MED-HIGH and cook for 10-15 Minutes if it doesn't boil that's fine.  I also use this time to remove more of the floaters.
Once my timer has gone off I dump the grains into a strainer and cover the strainer with a plate and set my timer for 90 Minutes and give the strainer a good shake every time I think about it.
After the Grains have set for 90 minutes I do the toilet paper test by setting a piece of grain on a piece of toilet paper, if the grains are properly dried there will be no water mark on the toilet paper.
Once fully dried the Grains should have expanded by about 2 times the original size.
Now it is time to move the grains to the quart jars, I find I usually fill the jars to about the 600 mL. line to use all the grains and evenly fill the jars.
I use SFD's or poly-fill for my lids.  Just because I cover both with foil, when i place in the PC.
I like to add a splash of vinegar to my PC water because I have semi-hard water and it prevents the nasty mineral build-up on my jars.
I fill the PC to about half way up the jars and bring the water to a slight boil before i add the lid.
Then I let the steam vent for a couple minutes before I put the stopper on.
Pressure Cook 90 minutes @ 15 PSI, then let the pressure drop naturally.
As soon as the pressure has dropped I like to CAREFULLY remove my jars and shake to redistribute the moisture, and will continue to periodically shake while they cool until it's time to use them.

Sorry this is so wordy and no pics I'll get some pics up eventually right now I'm doing mostly agar work, but once my dishes are ready I'll start working more on this and probably find some stuff I missed.

You don't want to rinse after the soak, because you're rinsing all the gypsum off.

that kinda sucks to know i've been adding gypsum all for not, i've been doing it this way for almost a year now and thought my grains looked so much better and were shaking and colonizing so much faster because of both the added gypsum and coffee.  thanx man!

I will be trying this next.  I like the simplicity you wrote this with.  Many techs seem to be pages of instructions for a process just couldn't be that complicated.  Thanks!
