Propagator for jar incubation?
    #19249534 - 12/09/13 10:55 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Would the base of a heated propagator work for incubation of jars?
I was going to build a TIT, but since I already have the base of a propagator I wondered if I could just use that?
Room temps are 8-10C so I figured an incubator of some sort is needed.
Would just having the jars on a towel or something and covered with a tea towel with the propagator on 20-25c work?

It's recommended that you heat the room instead of the jars or fruiting chamber directly directly.

In cold temps like yours, a properly made TiT is useful because it heats evenly and steadily.

A propagator will not heat evenly. Heating directly can cause one part  of the jar (usually where the heat source is) to get too hot and/or dry and the rest of the jar to get too wet and/or still be cold.

When I tried similar heating methods a long time ago, I quickly noticed condensation build up.

Think of a TiT as a small heated room. You need to create a space where the air is heated fairly evenly and not the jars directly.

Fair enough, I shall build a TIT then. I guess I can experiment in the future with the propagator and see how that goes.
