somewhat befuddled
    #19247088 - 12/08/13 08:35 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

so I bought some growkits a few weeks back...I know what your thinking! anyway, i'd completely given up hope on what I thought was a dastardly plan to get a few fluhes, take some spores and whizz off into a pf tek with a tasty pie at my side.
I didn't just chuck the kit away I left it seeing as I've dished out something it'd be foolish to dismiss it so easily. I figured that i'd see how long it would take for anything to happen in these tubs while I wait for all the equipment required for a pf to arrive in the post and get started on it.
to my surprise, after not checking on the kits for almost a week now after making some minor modifications in vein, something has come of this seemingly devilish path which I think is somewhat worthwhile prior to diving into the pf tek. I've spent some time already sifting through the archives looking at contams, pins, birthing ect...to try and find an explanation but nothing has fruited from my efforts, I hope you can help.

basically, having been setup and left in exactly the same conditions at exactly the same time give or take a few seconds, 1 tub has significantly more mycelium growth than the other BUT the second tub has a lot of pins were the first has none.
why is that?
also, these pins are around the inside edges of the tubs, there's nothing ontop what the explanation for this? and will that mean those pins have been rendered completely useless to the process?

i'm sorry if this has pushed some buttons but it has really intrigued me and my gut says its beneficial to know the answer

this is caused by genetics.

this is caused by genetics and fae.

just because the side is pinning doesnt mean they will abort.. they may grow.

i should've mentioned that the modifications i made were simply in no particular way slicing some holes into the bags with a scalpel to increase air flow, i'm in the uk so i'm pretty reluctant to open the bags completely average room temp what it is, they've been kept consistently at 23-26 celcius for just over 2 weeks

The pins coming in on the side of the one tub are growing that way because that spot is offering the best microclimate for the mycelium to produce fruits. Most bulk growers usually line their tubs with a black plastic trash bag, which will stick to the substrate as it shrinks while its resources are being spent.

This generally keeps side pinning from happening, which is what is going on in your situation.

I'm not sure about grow-kits like these, but IME if you're going to fruit straight out of the bag its best to put a few slits in the top to give it some FAE after you've reached full colonization. Don't take my advice over any instructions that came with your kit though, you should follow those to a T.

I can't say why you're not seeing anything out of the other tub, it probably just hasn't finished colonizing. If not, you could be looking at a contam, which could be the case.

Keep updating if you have any more issues

cheers bud, I really hadn't planned for anything to come of this after the instrucions provided failed to live up to their promise i'm pretty tempted to get my PF gear ready to go before Pf'in equipment finishes arriving, if u can see in the first picture there's a draw on the floor to the left which i'm gong to be using instead of a terrarium/vivarium (got it for free from a local auction house), the plan is to cover in plastic sheeting for easy sterylising, with a layer verm/perlite which ever is used on the bottom, I was thinking of maybe getting that done and dumping the contents of the boxes into there with a clear plastic sheet over the top with holes for FAE and then misting/fanning for the duration that these pitiful pieces of equipment can hold out for

alternatively opening the bags up and placing steryl tin foil over the end to keep out contams and again misting/fanning

You can take my advice over the one in the kit--I won't mind.

If you intend to move on to cakes, you'll want to build a SGFC.  If you hurry you can do that now, you can put your trays in there and get a much better result from your kits.

do you think the draw could be used as an SGFC in the setup plan described above?

I think the major issue is that we're coming into winter now and in the UK the temps are below 16 degrees, i'm only just managing to get 23 degrees in the bags with a joke of a heat mat...

however I do have 2 buckets I can convert and replace for tie dying at a later date, but I can't get into that till later today its 3am at the moment

No, I'd use a clear plastic bin.  You want something clear, deep and with a lid.
