"garlic in the raw state can carry harmful (potentially fatal) botulism bacteria."

 That's pretty much all food.

I couldn't really take the article seriously after that, as it's just cherry picking "facts" to further it's own cause.

Versus what, religious logic? Garlic and onions have been shown to be pretty healthy, so  Also "bad breath/odor" is pretty subjective, but a cool finding in a study was that garlic lovers seem to be more attracted to other garlic lovers, while people who didn't eat garlic were repelled by garlic eaters.

I too use at least one of them in almost everything I cook.

That's fine and dandy.  I feel garlic almost immediately, especially when it is raw.  Makes me depressed and foggy.  I felt this before I even knew aboutsulphone hydroxyl ion.  I am not directly saying garlic is poison, just that it has negative effects on me and others may be experiencing these as well.  I find it interesting that it frowned upon by taoists and specifically mentioned in ayurvedic medicine.

Whenever I start to feel sick, I eat a fat spoonful or two of raw garlic, and it kicks that colds ass. I feel better by morning, every single time.
If i eat some really garlicy food, I'll feel the opposite of how you describe. It makes me happy, makes me feel healthy, etc.
Garlic is antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal. It's also an antioxidant, helps reduce the risk of heart disease, and prevents insect bites.
Everything in moderation, but it seems the benefits of garlic far outweighs any acclaimed negative effects.
Live by your body - if garlic makes you feel gross then don't eat it.

raw chicken is unsafe for human consumption because of outside lifeforce.
I am stating that garlic has negative effects because of sulphone hydroxyl ion, not because of an outside bacteria

ayurvedic medicine is some slack bullshit, OP.

but i dunno, maybe eating "immoderate amounts" of Garlic ain't good for you, just like immoderate amounts of most anything.

in low amounts, Garlic is known to be quite a health re-enforcer, from my understanding.

Well, it looks like the Taoists were wrong on this one. I eat tons of garlic and onions, and I'm in better shape than most people ten years younger than me.

Tomatoes were also thought to be poisonous because they're from the nightshade family...  when was the last time that a slice of pizza killed someone?

There seems to be lacking study on this topic.
I feel like shit when I eat.  When my brother eats it his schizophrenic symptoms drastically increase.  Thought others might be able to relate.  But unfortunately science rules all.

But actually Dr. Beck did an actual scientific research to prove this.

The following text is quoted from this link: http://www.reikiempow...

I am as surprised and shocked as you will be to hear such a respected scientist as Dr Bob Beck telling us that garlic is highly toxic. Editor]

The reason garlic is so toxic, the sulphone hydroxyl ion penetrates the blood brain barrier, just like DMSO, and is a specific poison for higher life forms and brain cells.

We discovered this much to our horror, when I was the world's largest manufacturer of ethical EEG biofeedback equipment. We'd have people come back from lunch that looked clinically dead on the encephalograph, which we used to calibrate their progress. "Well, what happened?" " Well, I went to an Italian restaurant and there was some garlic in my salad dressing!".

So we had 'em sign things that they won't touch garlic before classes or we were wasting their time, and money and my time. I guess those of you who are pilots or have been in flight tests... I was in flight test engineering in Doc Hallan's group in the 1950's.

The flight surgeon would come around every month and remind all of us: "Don't you dare touch any garlic 72 hours before you fly one of our airplanes, because it'll double or triple your reaction time. You're three times slower than you would be if you'd [not] had a few drops of garlic."

Well, we didn't know why for 20 years later, until I owned the Alpha-Metrics Corporation. We were building biofeedback equipment and found out that garlic totally desynchronizes your brain waves.

So I funded a study at Stanford and, sure enough, they found that it's a poison. You can rub a clove of garlic on your foot - on the sole of your foot - and you can smell it shortly later on your wrists. So it penetrates the body. This is why DMSO smells a lot like garlic: that sulphone hydroxyl ion penetrates all the barriers including the corpus callosum in the brain.

Any of you who are organic gardeners know that if you don't want to use DDT, garlic will kill anything in the way of insects.

Now, most people have heard most of their lives that garlic is good for you, and we put those people in the same class of ignorance as the mothers who at the turn of the century would buy morphine sulphate in the drugstore and give it to their babies to put 'em to sleep.

If you have any patients who have low-grade headaches or attention deficit [disorder], they can't quite focus on the computer in the afternoon, just do an experiment - you owe it to yourselves.

Take those people off garlic and see how much better they get, very, very shortly. And then let them eat a little garlic after about three weeks. They'll say: "My God, I had no idea that this was the cause of our problems." And this includes the de-skunked garlic's, Kyolic, some of the other products.
Very unpopular, but I've got to tell you the truth.

(Source: From a lecture by Dr Robert [Bob] C. Beck, DSc., given at the Whole Life Expo, Seattle, WA, USA, in March 1996)
this the best i got for science.
Do you.  I just thought others might be interested seeing how it makes me feel like complete shit.
my apologies for the /thread

And science has shown that it's a pretty good addition to your diet for GI issues and an immune system boost.

What symptoms does the garlic exasperate? Something as serious as schizophrenia needs to be controlled with medication, and if you really notice a "drastic increase", he is not taking his medication. Garlic will not overpower or interact with any antipsychotic.

he is though.  You dont think schizophrenics still have symptoms while on meds?  da fuk.  I think it is bold to make a statement as your last line when there is no conclusive data on either side.  He eats shitloads of garlic he feels suicidal and symptoms increase.  I chime in and im like garlic makes me feel like shit watch out for it.  He stops he eating garlic and says he has been feeling way better.  No science there, just interesting to me.

I eat garlic and onions somewhat frequently and have never noticed any ill effects from it...

One time at work the homeowner had a little garden full of garlic, I ate a whole bunch of it raw right from the garden, then continued to work in a house with no AC on a 90 somethin' degree day for another 10 hours and I felt fine the whole time, my dad did the same and was fine...

I don't believe this .

ahahahahah
i hope you have a perspective on this shiva

a strain of sweet potato has been used to as an effective method of birth control
celery is nut as well
It's stringy and tastes like crunchy water, but celery is the swizzle stick that can stir up your sex life. Every stalk of the stuff is packed with androstenone and androstenol, two pheromones that can help you attract women the way trailer parks attract tornadoes. (Don't worry, these steroids are different from the steroid androstenedione.)

"When you chew a stalk of celery, you release androstenone and androstenol odor molecules into your mouth. They then travel up the back of your throat to your nose," says Alan Hirsch, M.D., author of Scentsational Sex. "Once there, the pheromones boost your arousal, turning you on and causing your body to send off scents and signals that make you more desirable to women."

Try it next time you're in a bar. Grab the celery from your brother-in-law's Bloody Mary and munch away. "The pheromones take effect immediately, so you should notice the women around you paying more attention to you right away," says Dr. Hirsch

Well it goes a long way when you are trying to convince people that a food destroys your brain and you cannot even use proper grammar, let alone writing words that do not even exist

And you still have provided no proof to back up your claim with any scientific study that could be duplicated

I'm aware of the sattvic diet, and do see value in keeping to the diet when undertaking rigorous spiritual practice--but I feel for the layperson, by and large the effects of rajasic and tamasic foods will be subtle enough that this diet is not necessary.

I have respect for the ayurvedic tradition though--when I was living in India, I inevitably got very sick--took the antibiotics a travel doctor had recommended for such a situation, still sick--went to various Indian doctors, took their advice, still sick--eventually went to a traditional ayurvedic doctor, took his advice, instantly better.

Pretty much. The final straw was a pharmacist trying to sell me pills that were clearly labelled "WARNING! Has been shown to be carcinogenic in lab rats."

The only thing I need an Indian pharmacy for is the over the counter ketamine.

It's been a few years since I've been there, perhaps things have changed (I'm sure a little bribe would be enough to change a pharmacists mind though).

When I was there, ketamine and valium were easily obtained OTC--combined with some quality hashish, it's how I survived 24hr+ long drives in cramped Indian vechicles.

The only thing that really interested me about this thread is how it claimed that taoists and ayurvedic medicine shunned garlic. Is there any legit sources for that claim? The only thing i can find is this article regurgitated on several lame websites, and then another article saying the exact opposite http://homeofayurveda.org/tag/garlic-and-ayurveda/

There been quite a few studies showing the benefits of garlic and onion so I don't see myself stopping anytime soon, especially since i've always enjoyed them and have pretty great health. I think its good to switch up what foods year eating once in a while however, and take breaks on foods...so maybe i'll give it 2 weeks off just as an experiment.

In the meantime, find me a legit source on ayurverdic/toaists recommending against garlic please

what is this blasphemy you speak of? Garlic is a highly valued medicinal herb. Used for thousands of years.
Probably one of the world's healthiest foods. Get out of here with that nonsense.

While I'm going to agree on some level that modernism has utterly ruined any other way of knowing anything as real and measurable, when it comes to measurable effects of plants on the body the scientific method is about the only one I'm going to take seriously.

OP is right that scientific method is rubbish for measuring somethings but for other's it is the only way.

You would assume that cultures with high garlic consumption would suffer from these effects. Just like all the other people posting. If it is as bad as described then why do these cultures (like China and India) still consume the plant?

So a pro and con:
I am very much in favor of leaving modernism and its ideas where they belong, in a laboratory. Where they have so far (through not looking or lack of evidence) not found out that garlic affects humans in a negative way.

I managed to convince a few by reminding them that only kids who believe get presents and I secretly hadn't believed for years.

my teacher took me in the hallway and was like "you have to stop telling kids that santa isnt real"

and I was like "ok teacher so you're saying santa is real?"

lol I was such a smart ass

I love garlic

i know a guy that got his teeth shaved down for some reason
they look like sharp vampire fangs he used to have parties at his place and for a small amount of time when I was fucked up I though he was a vampire :paranoid:
but he is actually a really nice guy

i was just impressed with his whole being, what a cool but funny looking/sounding old man.

but even funnier was when he said "drink snake venom, you'll live"  :canthelpbutlaugh:

so maybe if you get shot by a garlic bullet, like he says, maybe that'd do it... but eating Garlic seems to be fine, no one seems to be dying from it.
