First time birthing questions

It's been a long time since I've been on here, but I finally got the balls and the confidence to finally start my first PF Tek. I did 12 pint jars and only one got spider web moldy looking contamination so I chucked it. I also ruined another one. But of that I was able to birth 10. I set up a terrarium with a tote container with 2 or 3" of perlite, about an inch of water as well, and a bunch of holes on all six sides.
After doing this I pulled out each cake, washing it under water then rolling it in more vermiculite then placing it in the chamber on top of a piece of aluminum foil. I put all ten in with a little space between each other and misted the cakes down good enough to moisten the vermiculite then sealed the container.
Those are the steps I took and I feel as though everything went well in theory. But the parts I have questions for are as follows:
1: When I was making the holes in the bottom, the container cracked. The crack is about 6" long. I assumed I'm making holes already and setting it on towels so I'm hoping that won't cause a problem. But I'll leave that to more knowledgeable people to tell me. Plus I still have enough time to fix it i think since I just started everything.
2: I was never really taught that lighting was as important for this like other things, but I do have a small regular CFL slightly directed towards them. Should I focus harder on lighting?
3: What is a good spacing for the cakes? I would assume that the more room they have to grow the better?
Thanks for any pointers. I'll also keep updates on what happens.

1. Next time try placing a piece of wood behind the spot where you're drilling. This will prevent cracking.
2. A small cfl that's 6500k is fine on a 12/12 timer.
3. At least 2 inches between each cake.
And checkout mushrooms.com and follow it to a t and you will not fail.

You want the SGFC raised up about 4 inches. Put some kind of spacer under each of the corners. You'd also want your perlite around 4 inches deep.
You forgot to dunk, and since they were pint jars, I'm sure the cakes are craving water. You might still get a flush, but not as good as if you'd dunked them before rolling.
Just put some tape along the crack, and poke holes where holes were covered.
Cakes 2 inches apart are about standard.
The light should be fine, but a 6500K CFL bulb close by would be perfect.

Thanks for the responses. I did forget to dunk. And thank you for the links, I will check them out as well. I have been in between two projects so some things I've learned I forget sometimes... I guess that's all part of learning! Either way it's become an awesome hobby.
IF the cakes are struggling in a week would I be fine to dunk them and retry?
And I put spacers under the container, thanks. And my spacing is fine then. Thanks!
I believe I'm going to try coming up with a little contraption to put in myself for the lighting as well. We shall see.
