Birthing these jars? (w/ pics)
    #19247475 - 12/08/13 09:50 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Hey guys! After spending weeks reading these forums and absorbing so much knowledge(though i feel i am even yet to scratch the surface) ive decided to start my first grow!

I am planning on doing the classic PF TEK, i have 20 1/2 pint jars, verm, brf, gypsum, my SGFC ready and everything. The only problem i seem to possibly be encountering is my jars.
They look like this

They have this sort of curve to the neck and I am wondering if that will be a problem when birthing? Because i dont think im ready to break them up and spawn to like a bulk monotub or anything, but im not necessarily sure if these jars will work for the PF TEK. they were the only 1/2 pint jars available in my area, i went to 5 different stores :frown:
Any help is appreciated thanks!!!

Spawn to coir/verm or get new jars.

You can spawn the cakes to bulk in trays or similar containers. Just pasteurize or sterilize the coir/verm in some hot water then drain it out until it's barely dripping, but not too dry.
Then crumble the cakes in a Ziploc bag and mix in your sterilized container with a glove or sterilized utensil and cover tightly with plastic wrap or foil, preferably plastic so you can see your progress. Poke a few holes with a toothpick then set it some where cozy and wait a week and it should be doing well. You can then place the trays into the sgfc when ready.

you have 3 choices i see with those jars you can either mini mono, buy new jars (those are great for agar i would start learning), or do like a mini cup of shrooms add on or case it

Why not buy jars online?  Or use plastic ones?

Btw I've bought these same jars but all I could do with them is cut up the cakes and use em to spawn to bulk in a monotub.

everyones saying spawn to coir... yet you have your sgfc ready to go... so if you would like to work with what you have then here is a suggestion.

take your cakes and crumble them..
place the crumbled cakes in a Tupperware container.
use a thin layer of verm to case the crumbled cake.
throw the tupperware container in your sgfc and continue as if it was a cake.

OR

rub off the dry verm layer on top and place entire jar in sgfc..(you will risk your yeild this way because of side pins and moisture)

hm ok so it seems like spawning into a monotub is my best bet untill i get new jars? ill read up on that an agar.
silverstem - so putting them in the tupperware container would be better than just leaving them in the jars?
(thanks for the replies guys!)

If your looking for something easy just put em in tupperwares as silverstem's sayin.  It'll deff be the best option with those jars.  There ain't much to do with those specific kind of jars... They suck, I know lol

You must be living in the middle of nowhere if you cant find half pint wide mouth mason jars.  If you really can't find them locally just order online, a flat of 12 on ebay or amazon for under $20 shipped.

Patience my friend, do it right the first time... If your set on doing PF Tek, then do PF Tek... If you want to do monotub, do a monotub... Don't half ass the production..

Sometimes (depending where you live) it's very difficult to find the correct jars (I could only find plastic).
Those jars you have are no good. Still, if you are gonna use them, you can always break them (carefully, very carefully) when they are fully colonized to birth the cake. If it survives, great; if it doesn't, do the tupperware thing Silverstem suggested.

Just :2cents:

Don't ever break jars.. That's retarded, dangerous, and a waist is money.. Save them, for when you want to try casing, but for now:

You don't need a jar. I'm sure you can find cheep glasses, of even tough plastic cups that won't melt while sterilizing. If you still have spendable money, go buy some glasses and tin foil. Make a lid with the tin foil and poke right through it with the needle. Or you might already have what you need at home.

I have these tiny ass glasses I love using, a little bigger than shot glasses. I have like 10 of them, and the small size makes them fully colonize much faster. Of course the yield won't be as good per cake, but that's why I use 10.

I bought those too before I finally found the correct ones at Hobby Lobby, of all places. But, they are not useless.. they work great for elevating my SGFC.

Neat Tek, I didn't think they came in Polypropylene.
