Cities are crazy expensive.
I know people who live in New York City, and pay like $2500 for a one-room studio apartment!
I like that middle-ground where I have easy access to the city via public transportation, but enjoy lower rents and more peace and quiet.

I lived in cities for all of my life... I think the suburbs would be more more enjoyable.

fuckn luv the city. NYC train pass is like 180 a month, and it beats the HELL out of trying to drive or take a taxi anywhere. totally worth it.
the ONLY down side to the city is you always gotta search for someplace to pee. i pee a lot, like once an hour... and when i lived in NYC, it was like climbing a damn mountain trying to get around. i'd have to basically hop from starbucks to mcdonalds to starbucks to mcdonalds just to pee, and then keep moving. and they dun have bathrooms in the subway stations because people jerk off in there and smoke crack and sleep in there n shit.
in TOKYO, it's damn perfect. there are bathrooms EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!!! i'm sure i was a damn burden on the friend i was visiting there, but there are tons of bathrooms in every subway station and all over the place.
i like the burbs too, cuz of all the nice fusion restaurants n that and that's where the hottest chicks live.
i DON'T like the country. i've tried, and no. can't stand the country. sorry.

Suburbs are basically a conglomeration of everything wrong with both the city and the country. Fuck'em.
Me? I prefer a legit wilderness to be walking distance from my home--but I enjoy having friends living in downtown city cores, so I can visit them occasionally to get my fix of urbanity.
I live in the suburbs and I'm a pretty short distance from what I would consider some pretty legit wilderness (considering the location anyway.) Deer, coyotes, foxes, rabbits, herons, turtles etc etc are pretty common to see.

We have that shit in the middle of the city. I was working out in rock creek park in downtown DC about a month ago and walked up to a bunch of deer grazing. Then, leaving the park there were deer coming out of VP Biden's residence (not the residence.. The property lol). I've seen foxes on the mall in front of the Lincoln memorial and heard owls in the middle of the city.
Apparently, deer are a problem at the VP residence. Dead Deer Lays on Cheney's Lawn for Days

fuck big cities. i lived in seattle and got fucking sick of all the noise, traffic, homeless, just constant bullshit.
I like living in the sticks in flyover country. Shit, still get amazon delivered to my door, still have tv/internet, big stores within an hours drive.

It was my second bear sighting. I went with my roommate to the Halliburton scout Camp in Algonquin provincial park. He had worked there for ten years and never seen a bear. We pulled into the parking lot, and there was a bear walking in between the cars. It was pretty hilarious.

My idea of wilderness probably differs from what you are thinking of. I talking about pristine wilderness, mountains, clean rivers and lakes, animals not acclimatized to human contact, and no easy road access.
I think you live in the GTA, no? I'm in the same area right now, so I think I know what you are talking about--it's not far to get to some green space around here. But in my mind, I'm thinking of northern Canadian wilderness--a horizon almost unbroken by human development.

Whaattt? Ten years in Algonquin--or just about anywhere in northern Ontario--without sighting a black bear is insane--it's like black bear central up there.
Makes it difficult for me to dumpster dive, because 'bear proof' sometimes also means 'shiva proof'.

I live just outside of downtown and I'm literally 200m from a 400 acre park with all that wilderness as well.

Yeah. Pretty funny that I was there for literally less than a minute and saw one.

The park I'm talking about is something like 12,000 acres (won't name it but it should be easy to guess which one I'm talking about,) but yeah Toronto does have some awesome forested parks very close to downtown as well. I've been lucky enough to do some reforestation planting work in the area over the years, which is nice because I can't really travel to remote areas for planting any more.

I've spent a fair amount of time in remote forest in the north as well and yeah it is a totally different story, but these days I have to settle for what is nearby for the most part.

My friend grew up in a house that backed up to a beautiful ravine in Rosedale. Toronto has some awesome green spaces.
