Hi,
This is my favorite cactus in my collection, I bought it from Ikea a few months ago. I have no idea what it is called though. Can somebody please help me identify it? Thank you!

Thanks!
How on earth do you go about figuring out the names? I tried searching on google for spherical cactus with red flowers, and various cacti websites, but had no idea where to begin!

I've looked at lots of cacti so I can make an educated guess on the Genus then I look at photos online for the species.

With that one I knew it was a gymnocalycium by the way the base of the flower looks. Its name is Latin for naked calyx. Which is what first caught my eye with the group. link

By the base of the flower, do you mean the greenish budding part, or the actual base of the flowers themselves? I checked out that link, and the flowers all look a bit different, but there is a similarity between the green bases.

The green part with the pink tinted scales. I guess the proper term is flower tube.
to me its a defining characteristic I'd use at first glance when like scrolling down on the web.

Thanks, well that is totally my interesting cactus lesson for the week . Now all I need to do is remember the word 'Gymnocalycium' - these names are such a mouthful, and a pain to memorize! Whoever comes over now I'm going to point at it and say "that's a gymnocalycium," and watch their eyes glaze over, cos nobody I know aside from one friend cares about cacti lol.

the common name for it is a chin cactus. kinda lame, but it can make things easier. Mine was in mid flower earlier this summer, never fully open though. unless i missed it.

That refers to the bulge beneath each areole, that superficially looks like a chin.
