Need Identification: Potential Cubensis?
    #19245976 - 12/08/13 04:35 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

This is my first post, so I apologize for any ignorance that may come across. I found these today and want to make sure they are what I think they are. I initially thought cubensis but now I am thinking maybe not. These were picked in somewhat rural tampa area after a rain right next to a recently dried up pond (really was just a flooded bottom of a hill). I apologize if pictures aren't that great. They were found near the edge of the hill (not directly on where the water was)

You'll find Psilocybe cubensis growing from dung, usually in pastures.

I think these may be a Laccaria species.

With the warm snap we have had, cubes may be out. Stick to cow pastures near wet areas. Welcome to the Shroomery.

Thanks, Glad I posted. Anyone that thinks they may know what they are I am still very interested.

It's hard to get into those cow pastures without being obvious (on the road I am thinking of), not sure how to approach that without getting shot/ arrested for trespassing.

The best way is actually just to ask permission from the land owner. If you're respectable looking and straight forward, you can usually find a rancher to allow you on his property for mushroom hunting, fishing, hiking etc. I've offered to mend fences/pick up trash/help with stable work and it's worked out wonderfully. Believe me, you don't want to get chased down or shot at!

You can also consider public lands, but FWC, park rangers, sheriffs, OPS personnel and visitors make it a very risky option. I was chatting with the land manager for a park on the Space Coast who mentioned she had to designate/post the pastures as construction zones to increase the trespassing penalty to a felony.

As suggested above, you found a Laccaria species. Possibly Laccaria laccata. The Laccaria down here in Florida exhibit a wide range of colors, but you will get a feel for them the more you find them. You'll be able to ID them from 30 feet away and not even have to stop.
