Need Feedback on Incubation Chamber: Cube + Mexicana (Pics included)
    #19244912 - 12/08/13 01:06 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Greetings cultivators ... i'm new and trying.

I just started 3 jars of Cubes and also bag with Mexicana Jalisco.
I have a empty jacket closet that I turned into an incubation chamber.

It's completely dark
Temp is around 26 C (79F)
Humidity 36%

Will this yield good results or do I need to change anything?

Pics below

Thanks for your help

It's almost, if not completely impossible to say your exact yield being big or small. There is a laundry list of factors that go into it. Isolates, sub mix, RH, FAE., Etc etc.

Remove the foil...that should have been removed after sterilization.

Underneath the foil I have taped the 4 inoculation holes, is that good practice?

The tape is ok if it is 3M Micropore tape.....any other tape is bad.....

Tape in general when you have a dry verm layer is just not needed at all....

It's not 3M micropore tape ... could got out an get it tomorrow.

If I leave the current transparent scotch tape will it damage the newly injected spores?

Just no air exchange. Micropore tape has well, micro pores. So the jars can breathe. Rugular tape constricts air flow

You do not need tape....period.

Remove the scotch tape and leave the holes exposed.

The dry verm layer is your filter, and it does a damn good job.

just leave the holes exposed, and it doesn't need to be dark or humid

REMOVING THE TAPE :-)

Does the mycelium (jars) need air to incubate well?  Is this why the tape is not wanted.

Tape in general is not wanted because it is not needed.

Scotch tape is not wanted because it seals the jars air tight, which is bad...you need some GE.

As for incubation.......

Jars/bags/tubs/trays should colonize @ room temperature getting ambient/indirect light.

Main pinning triggers are full colonization, FAE and Evaporation off of the substrate.

Light is a secondary pinning trigger. For tropical species temperature is not a pinning factor.

P. Cubensis are a tropical species. You could colonize at 70F and fruit at 80F with great results.

Light has been proven beneficial during all stages of mycellium growth. Mushrooms like mammals have a circadian rhythm.

You want ambient/indirect light(on a 12/12 schedule preferably) for colonization and consolidation.

You want direct/intense 6500K light on a 12/12 schedule for fruiting.

Optimal temps are mid 70s throughout the whole grow, but anywhere from 65F-80F is acceptable.

Incubation is outdated/uneeded unless temps in the range stated above cannot be kept.

The inside of the jar is always a few degrees warmer than the outside because the mycellium produces heat..mycellium tends to stall at temps above 86F , and contams thrive.

Fruiting at cooler temps tends to produce denser, meatier fruits, while fruiting at higher temps will often produce hollow, less dense stems.

Mycelium should be exposed to ambient room light from day of inoculation as has been known for many years.  Light is not a pinning trigger until after full colonization and an increase in air is given, and even then it's a secondary pinning trigger.

not needed but it wont hurt i guess, as long as it provides enough GE so the jars dont stall

True true. All I was saying is there was no need to go out and buy tape, just remove the already existing scotch tape. Micropore sure is handy to have around though, especially for medical applications.

Expert cultivators, I recently read the following, do you agree?

"To speed up development jars and bags should be shaken regularly to distribute the colonised kernels throughout the substrate every few days. When the grain is completely covered with mycelium it's ready for further use."

is this correct ??

No just shake once at about 25 percent colonization. Any more is counterproductive

No......Shake grain jars at about 20-30% and thats it.

More shaking might actually set u back because of the recovery time.

It usually takes 48 hours for them to fully recover.....you would be leaving hardly any time for the mycellium to spread if shaken every few days.

My mexicana A bag was at 25% colonization
So I shook the bag and crumbled the chunks of mycelium into small bits to spread it through bag.
Hope that's the procedure?

The pf-tek jars are at 20% however, the vermiculite reaches the top of the jar.  so there is nothing to shake??  Or does the shaking bring more air?

sorry for the newbie questions.

Iv never used bags, only grain jars but i dont see any problem with your method of shaking.

You Don't shake PF tek jars.
