I spend a few minutes before class ginking around with the short essay. thought it would be helpful to make some changes to try and make it more factual at least  Especially with the RC's cuz ive definately herd of that.

With the LSD they can put a drop on a big mushroom and just have them eat the whole thing  8$ a hit vrs 25 for one. Really ive only heard of this happening once. i cant imagine it happens a lot. im guessing an lsd dealer wanted to make some quick cash.

An inspection of the Black Market of Psilocybin Mushrooms, Using the Supply and Demand Model

Although fungi are one of the most abundant forms of life on earth, we know little about them. In North America, the tradition of collecting and using fungi is relatively new when compared to Europe and Asia. However, the demand for fungi has never been higher, leading to inflated prices and uncontrolled black markets. In some cases, species are forced into the black market due to international drug laws mixed with the active alkaloids that naturally occur inside them. These mushrooms are called psilocybin mushrooms, and ounce per ounce they are the most expensive fungi you can buy.
Psilocybin and psilocin are listed as Schedule I drugs under the United Nations 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substance. These tryptamine alkaloids are the main drugs in “magic mushrooms”. Due to the legality of the mushrooms across the world, species are often cultivated and sold in the black market, however mushrooms are still legal in some countries such as Austria, and sold in open markets. Psilocybin mushroom spores however remain legal in most countries including most of the United States, and are sold freely online, allowing consumers to grow psilocybin mushrooms in almost any controlled environment.
The easiest species to cultivate is a fungi called Psilocybe cubensis, it grows in warm tropical environments and fruits easily on cow dung. This species is not only extremely easy to cultivate, but has many genetic varieties to choose from due to the high demand. Spore distributors can isolate genetics and market the spores accordingly. As a result, 99% of the psilocybin containing fungi grown and sold in the black market is Ps. cubensis.
Although there are well over 100 different species of hallucinogenic fungi, most cannot be cultivated easily and in such numbers. The demand for Ps. cubensis is high among new users of mushrooms, though it is not the most potent psilocybin mushroom, and far from the most interesting. Most conditioned users look for more potent species, or ones that have more interesting levels of the many tryptamine alkaloids which produce the effects. As a result, the demand for more potent species such as Psilocybe azurescens, or Psilocybe cyanescens is larger than that of Ps. cubensis, leading to a higher price per quantity.
The problem with these species for producers is that they can only be grown outdoors once a year with good success. In addition rare species are often kept by mushroom hunters, or sent to academic institutes for further study, thus they are not available in the market. This leads to a market which is constantly shifting during the rainy months. As the supply of rare and potent species increases, the amount of psilocybin mushrooms sold also increases. The constant demand of these mushrooms keeps the market steady as the market shifts from Ps. cubensis to the more potent and or rare wood lover species. During the shift the supply of Ps. cubensis is constant, always making up the difference in supply in the unregulated market.
The market’s supply and demand does not fluctuate on average. But isolated areas in the USA, mostly the central United States, have almost no supply, and often a high demand. Due to the federally illegal drugs, many do not want to risk getting jailed in federal prison for the high profit of growing psilocybin mushrooms. Some “dealers” see a way around this by selling non-psilocybin active mushrooms.
The average recreational mushroom user has a lack of information that leads to a faux market within the market. In cases, people will infuse normal mushrooms with drugs as not to get caught with psilocybin mushrooms. A lack of quality control allows distributors to do whatever they want in the market, including lacing mushrooms with an assortment of drugs. Examples have been shown where RCs in the 2C-x family and LSD have been used produce psychoactive effects. These laced fungi will not show up on a drug test for psilocybin or psilocin if the mushrooms were to be confiscated. The worst scenario is when distributors pick random fungi in their environment and sell them in the Psilocybin mushroom market, as many of these species are poisonous or deadly.
As shown, the demand for psilocybin mushrooms is always high because many people are waiting to take them. The supply however is low, typically very low for mushroom hunters, while high for growers and their distributors, but generally never higher than the demand. Due to the natural increase of psilocybin mushrooms during the rainy months, the supply of psilocybin mushrooms increases while the demand decreases.  During the dry months, the demand for psilocybin mushrooms increases due to favorable conditions while the supply decreases due to the lack of natural psilocybin mushrooms. The market itself is unstable, not due to shifting supply or demand curves, but due to the supply of fake psilocybin species, which creates an inefficient market. But it remains very strong underground, leading to the most expensive fungi you can buy.

Also, hate to shit on your parade but I think Italian white truffles currently range $3000-$6,000 a pound (wet), whereas the price on shrooms is $500-$1000 a dry pound (wet 10 pounds), so actives are no where near the most expensive mushroom around, though they are lucrative.   Not that your prof will know better, but it just occurred to me to look up the truffles as I knew their prices were stupid.

It seems funny to me that legit 'cid would be cheaper per hit than mushrooms, but then again psilocybin has been free for me as long as I have been able to correctly ID the mushrooms so I tend to undervalue them in my mind.  I guess for the chump on the street boomers are still more expensive than L.
:mindblown:

I just googled "current market price white truffle"  and a bunch of articles came up, some said it went as high as $10,000 a pound but that is probably on the worst of years.  I found them on sale online for as low as $200/ounce which works out to $3200/lb.

Your very right about this.  The white truffle market in Oregon is trash now due to unethical harvesting techniques.... I.e. "Raking".    A lot of pickers raked up the truffles and sold undeveloped non-aromatic truffles and gave our white truffles a bad name which is sad because our truffles are comparable when ripe/mature.  I hope in the years to come this changes.
