does co2 buildup help initiate pinheads?
    #19240937 - 12/07/13 01:21 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

i remember reading in a book that co2 buildup in the initial phase of the mushroom growth is actually not a bad thing, but a good thing, and it helps with the pinhead initiation. can anybody explain the science behind this? that how is it that co2 which should be gotten rid of, is actually helpful at the beginning stage of the mushroom growth?!

It's not, that book is wrong.

FAE is the number one pinning trigger, your myc needs to breathe oxygen just like you do.

Check the publication date on that thing

You want a high CO2 level for colonization, but also some GE. One everything's colonized, you introduce massive amounts of FAE to start evaporation and initiate pinning.

maybe it was referring to reishi?

I don't know much about reishi but I read their growth is more based on CO2 amounts than most fungi

It's sort of the other way around. It's the sudden drop in CO2 that helps initiate pinning. So during colonization you want allow for some CO2 buildup and to initiate pinning you provide a large amount fresh air which lowers it.

The reason you want a high CO2 concentration during colonization is often misunderstood because initial colonization would actually go faster with more air.

We keep the CO2 high during colonization for three main reasons.  The first is that less of the substrate is consumed during colonization, therefore more of its biological mass is available later for producing mushrooms, increasing BE. The second is that a high CO2 level impedes the growth of most competitor fungi, so if those organisms are present, your mushroom mycelium will be at an advantage. The third is we've found a reduction in CO2 along with the other pinning triggers helps contribute to great pinsets.
