Adding a mouse-over mycology dictionary * 1
    #19244024 - 12/08/13 08:53 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I have an extensive online dictionary dealing with fungi, particularly gilled mushrooms (i.e. Agaricales). Many of these terms are not easy to find and some terms may not be found in any other place. I'd like it to be added to the MH/I forum as an open-source, mouse-over feature so that when a word appears in a post (and is also in the dictionary) the word will automatically create a mouse-over feature showing the definition.

Would this feature be helpful to visitors, members, and yourself?

I think it's a great idea and I encourage it to be included as a feature. The dictionary could be maintained by the users of the forum in wiki-style. Technically, it sounds feasible, too. Good plan!

Where's Andy when you need him?
Seems like he's been babbling about art. Which implies that he's bored.

I can barely code simple bash scripts, sorry, you're going to need to ask someone else unless you want to wait an unspecified amount of time for me to learn more. :smile2:

When you say
Quote:

I have an extensive online dictionary

that means you own the content?

This is an interesting problem...  To do as you spec, I think you must have to be able to "tag" terms in a tag field in the db, then do fancy stuff on post output that recognizes any terms tagged.  I might be able to do this in a wordpress setup quite easily.  You'd have to preload the db, of course, so the ability to get the data out of where it is in a form you can get into the new db is critical.

Some of you have probably experienced an annoying feature that I believe was controlled by browser plugin that autogenerates links in websites that link to 3rd party stuff.  Seems like a hijack to me, I disabled it as soon as I figured it out but don't recall 'zackly what the deal was.  It was intriguing, tho', that they got in between the content and the user and were able to create links by inserting their own 3rd party calls.  I have no idea how they'd be able to do that but I consider it quite fancy.  Probably too fancy...

Anyhoo..  What bbs are we on here?

This thread was moved from Mushroom Hunting and Identification.

Reason:
Moving to a forum where admins and coders can have an opinion. I do like the idea, let's see how feasible it is.

I'm a fan of this idea.

I think it'd work best as a glossary that has tags to cover known variations of the same term. Probably use javascript's onMouseOver event to query the tag database. A community based effort to edit the moderated glossary, like a Wikipedia clone perhaps, is, in my mind, the quickest way to build our comprehensive glossary.

waste of bandwidth... every page would have to use a script to search every word found in the post to every word in an entire different sql thread.

It's up to administration to decide what kind of overhead they're willing to handle if we were to see this through. I think it'd be a very good use of resources, as quite frankly I am of the opinion that this site is cluttered to the point that even if the average Joe were to UTFSE, the information is no longer as readily available as it is in comparison to some of our smaller competitors. Our project to rework our homepage has come to a screeching halt, so we don't even have that going at this point. So from the view of ease of use and our interest in spreading valid, readily available, up-to-date information, this would be an excellent initiative on the Shroomery's part.

Can you send the dictionary file(s) to ythan@shroomery.org and I'll see what I can do?

it would be javascript codes that would have to be included in the header or footer. this javascript would be a findString function included to a onmouseover included to a getdatabase function then a fetch database for the mouseover.  it would be a pain to create this code... yes its feasible but it would take someone like me a month to make.
