US veto...
    #1924384 - 09/17/03 07:10 AM (14 years, 11 days ago)

Quote:

While the U.S. move has won praise from Israel, who says the resolution was "lopsided" and "biased," Syria and the Palestinians have been quick to condemn the decision, warning it could lead to "catastrophic action."

"This is a sad day for the United Nations. I hope the U.S. veto will not be interpreted by Israel as a license to kill Yasser Arafat," chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat said.

Eleven of the 15 Security Council members voted for the resolution on Tuesday and three members -- Britain, Bulgaria and Germany -- abstained. The U.S. veto killed the resolution.

What do you think?

Hardly surprising. The US have vetoead many resolutions aimed at Israel. Even when a resolution does get passed Israel just ignores it anyway. I think we should just kick the US out of the UN, then it might be able to get something done... :smirk:

Personally, I think the UN needs a to be re-organised as to stop constant internal bickering intefering with decision making...

Perhaps the power of Veto should be removed?

I agree in theory , in cases where say 14 out of the 15 members are in agreement that is practically unanimous support.
It seems to undermine the whole effectiveness of the UN if one of the permanent members can veto any policy on any subject for any reason....

Im sure however, that the veto power has been used for the right reasons in some cases...

Im sure it has but it definitely doesnt help induce a sense of international unity if certain nations keep vetoing these resolutions which would have been passed without the veto. I think the US have a clear lead in the amount of Vetos. I think the UK are second.

The reason it was vetoed is simple. They refused to condemn groups like Hamas in it.
