So, things have been tighter than ever as far as monetary things go these days. Between paying for the house, my bills, and my medicine, I barely have enough money for food every month. I hate feeling like I am eating in survival mode. Every morning we wake up incredibly nauseous. Currently, my girlfriend and I have 2 and 1/2 boxes of pasta, a can of pinto beans, a garlic clove, and about 5lbs of white rice grains. We also have some spices, thankfully. Our meals are only so interesting with these options. We only eat about 1 meal a day, and even that is barely a meal. I feel like shit. What really bums us out the most is the fact that this is literally all we can afford in this day and age. Obviously we had more food right after we initially went shopping, but it doesn't last as long as we wish it would.
How do you guys do on food? Do you struggle too? Do you feast like a king? What does your pantry look like right now?

Mod should move this to the appropriate forum. This is the cultivation of edible & active mushrooms.

Im sorry to hear that man... You should go to your local church and request to be able to go to the food pantry. They have all sorts of good stuff. Ive had to go there before. Goodluck! ( Try growing some mushrooms that you can eat XD)

I'm a student so I buy all the cheapest groceries, granted I can still afford groceries. Hope your situation gets better.

sorry to hear that man.. ive struggled for food when i was a child.. even sunk down to stealing from my school cafe...raised by an alcoholic dad and no mother. i survived off roman noodles(i wouldn't suggest it, its not very nutritious). what i do suggest is RICE! very cheap. also whenever you have scraps of meat throw it into a broth add noodles and cut up some carrots and you have soup. dont buy stuff that goes bad quickly. if you google your county + food pantry's.. you will find people willing to help. mostly churches. if you go with unhealthy foods... pick hotdogs.. very inexpensive. plus cut them up throw it into a broth and BAM hotdog soup! i hope that helped... when i turned 15 i was givin a right to work by the government. got my first job as a janitor. later i took on 2 full time jobs to pay for my dads mortgage.. fun stuff.

Perhaps you could consider dumpster diving. Seriously though; check out the stuff stores dump because it's just past it's sell-by date, falsely labeled, etc.

I eat when I like. I go where I like. I see who I see. I do what I do. I see what I see. I just like to roam on my feet. I'm going to the circus do you go? We should see. I know your brother from law school. We went by the bus & missed it. Who's your brothers gf he was telling me of last time I met? I didn't know that he discussed that with my brother a week before because when I got home bro confirmed that he told him.

You can try growing or raising your own food. Seeds are cheap and you really don't need a lot space.

For one thing hit up every food bank you can. Salvation Army, or anything similar. I have found the church or donation orientated ones are a lot better than any government run food bank. Can you get food stamps, or what ever they call that now?
One thing that really helps is to try and keep some basic spices and butter or oil on hand with some flour. It cheap to make your own bread and it tastes so good. It makes the cheapest grilled cheese and tomato soup wonderful.
Find some mexican recipes like Arroz Con Pollo (chicken and rice) and add some beans. I'll tell you what, there are some great mexican dishes you can make for cheap that taste good or at the least give you the proper diet and energy. Totillas are pretty much flour, salt and lard/crisco, and homemade they tatse so much better.
Being busted ass poor sucks, iv'e been there, adding peas to top ramen and thinking it's gourmet.
The thing you have to watch out for is all the processed foods. To much salt, and other garbage with no real nutrients. Even something like mac'n cheese from a box can be made from scratch using a bit of flour, butter, anbd milk to make a basic rue then add shreeded cheese. Add that sause to noodles and you can cut out so much crap.
Check out http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/type/budget/ That Arroz Con Pollo recipe is awesome. Use bullion cubes instead of broth and the rest you should have on hand for cheap cooking. Use chicken thighs and it comes out awesome. My wife cooks hers based/modified off of that and it dinner, lunch and another meal for very little.
Chicken, rice, beans/lentils, some veggies, bananas, hell, get some vitamins from the dollar store.

I used to work for the Salvation Army for awhile. It was a charitable endeavor that made me into one of the most precious persons of all time. They believe me to be one of the greats for sacrificing all for this. I have went up to people & saved them. I have done so much for this world, I have done more than anyone else in all of history and they say my name will be placed alongside that of Ghandi. For I am coming from the East. I know you will see me in a few. I went by with you before we went to golf last season remember? I recall it in my mind. I know I can see you there but when will you see me next? And why didn't you come to my pool party when I turned 17? I just miss you so much and want you to come back home man.

I probably spend more on food than I do in any other area of my life because a) I workout pretty often, 4 days a week at least b) food in the boomtown area I'm in is pretty expensive and c) I'm trying to gain weight, which is hard.
But, with all my bills combined I can usually pay for all of them with 25% of my overall income, so I can really eat whatever the hell I want, whenever. That probably owes to not having any debt, super super cheap rent for where I live and just in general, cars paid for, and making good coin at my job.
I just wish I had the space for a 1 year supply of food from costco. That'd save most people a TON of money every year. 1100 bucks a year for all your food? That's 3 bucks a day? Dirt cheap.

I can make fifty bucks last for a couple of weeks and still be content with my meals if I'm being smart about it. I eat lots of rice, beans, pasta, and potatoes. Spices are a must. I always keep fresh garlic on hand, and try to keep things like onions and peppers around too. Butter and cheese as well (you can make some makeshift mac and cheese with butter, cheese, garlic, and some milk and it's cheaper than buying pasta sauce). Even with a few ingredients and a variety of spices you can make things interesting enough from day to day. I guess I also try and buy two kinds of meat, usually a bunch of ground beef and a bunch of chicken. I freeze most and keep some in the fridge. When I run low I restock. What I get for meat also depends on price. Other things I tend to get are bread, cold cuts, hot dogs (cheap ones are gross, but they are also quick, easy, and really fucking cheap), and eggs. I also take a one-a-day vitamin. Not that I'm a healthy dude or anything but I figure it's probably better to just have it around and take.
I try to keep an idea of some dishes I can make in a crock pot when I grocery shop too. Things like beef stew or chili. You can make a big fucking pot of stuff like that and really stretch it out, and it's usually relatively cheap. Make it and eat it over rice or pasta so you get the flavor and all the goodness of the stew or whatever but only need to use a small amount to fill up. I freeze most in individual bags and then keep some in the fridge.
All of this was a drastic change in habits from half a year ago when I ate out a lot, like almost every day. Now I have no job and no money and no support so I gotta make due with what I can. I'm much happier though (with my eating habits at least). I eat much healthier and much cheaper. It will be nice to have made this adjustment when I have money again because I'll just save more (assuming I stay diligent and don't just start wasting it on food because I can). I still eat portions larger than I should (which would also let me stretch my dollar even more), I don't exercise, and I don't pay much attention to nutrition, but I think it's a step in the right direction health wise as well as financially.
Get on food stamps. They exist for people in your situation and they are not hard to get on.
