Using an older lc, how to tell if it's still viable?
    #19242799 - 12/07/13 10:01 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I read some older posts on the topic, but there didn't seem to be a clear answer on this topic.

I have 2 syringes with liquid lc that I only partially used about 4 months ago.  They were clean, they worked.  I put them in the fridge for about 3 months and they have been sitting gout for about 4 weeks.  I can still see the myc.  One looks white, the other syringe has a pale yellowish color, the myc and the water is this color.  I went ahead and knocked up a few pint jars.  I wish there was a study of some kind that showed what the percentage chance success was on lcs graphed over time, and what the visual signs might be of mycelial death or decay.

Anyone have experience with this?

2 weeks ago I tested a similar setup.  I had a 6 month old LC that was good.  One drop on agar after a week caused all sorts of goofy pink/red spots to show up.

The only true way to test the LC's are by knocking up agar, jars, cakes, ect.

I've used some pretty old ass LC syringes.  Stuff like oysters will grow myc/fruit in the needle and be almost impossible to inject out.  I took the needle off and squeezed a drop on agar, it was fine.  My reishi syringe I just knocked up a couple jars with, it's near a year old, took over quick as if it was brand new.

But yeah, like they said, only way to tell is give it something to grow on.

Well, on a brighter note- I used some syringes about 3 weeks ago that were about 4-5 months old. I hadn't put them in the fridge and I was worried about their age, but today, three weeks later, my jars are almost fully covered in fluffy, fuzzy mycelium cells. No signs of contamination in any of my jars.

Any way- good luck and happy tripping! If your jars do happen to become contaminated or simply don't grow, don't hesitate to update us. :- )

Update on my old LCs.  They seem to be working fine.  1 jar got trich but that may have been introduced during inoculation.  The other 12+ jars are getting good white spots.  I probably will start with new lc next time around but I needed to use them in a pinch and it worked fine, just fine.

And that ladies and gentlemen is how you kill a mans hopes and dreams with one post
I'm gonna wait myself a few months to even start thinking about LC, agar and master grain jars seem to be my bread and butter right now.

I restarted my grow with 3 cc's of liquid culture after the syringe sat around for 3 months on my counter. It took a while to colonize, but the grains were a bit wet and I forgot to use gypsum.

Update on test jars.  I think I may have messed up a little here by making the grains too dry.  I dry my grains on screens not the usual collander style like RR shows in his videos.  I read about someone who also does this who goes on to suggest that this dries the grains more than would the collander method.  So the white fuzzies are growing, but slowly and I don't know if I should fault the lc or the possibly too dry grains.  I'm starting over with fresh lc!  Thanks all.

if you simmer your grains, and they are dry on the outside after letting them sit for a while they should be perfect!

sounds like it might be okay to me. but hard to tell
