Old School Film (calling Burke or someone ANYONE)

i've been watching some old school Japanese films, and i'm gonna be watching some old school film noir movies, too.
so far i watched Tokyo Story by Yasujirô Ozu; which was a brilliant movie; and also i watched Woman in the Dunes by Hiroshi Teshigahara.
Tokyo Story was excellent... it was mostly all staged in one house (except the beginning and end) with master photography. most of the shots are stills, with the exception of the VERY FEW outside shots (one of the train comes to mind, but the first time you see it, the camera isn't moving, just zooming through shots from outside the port of Tokyo inland towards the house...) the Grandparents go into the city to visit their daughters and sons, and well... as the story usually goes...
it's a great film, but takes alot of "zen"; if you will...
now the aforementioned Woman of the Dunes is another beast altogether... i can't say too much without giving the story and ultimate symbology of the film away... but i can say that yes, their is dunes, yes, their is a particularly well acted woman, and man duo... and the set again, is very unmoving... basically, zoology and bug collecting hobbyist goes out into the desert, and villagers intersect him... and he's essentially doped into serving this woman in this house via rope ladder.
it's a very telling story, from the Japanese perspective anyways... and the wooden house and subtle way of living the woman and man takes their shelter in, provides for some very cool cinematography, angles, some camera tricks, and some really good yet simple story telling; and also a stirring soundtrack that really takes you into the depths of the films jarring vision.
add your oldschool takes on your oldschool favorites, or check out something oldschool that you haven't seen yet... and post about it.
i will be keeping up to date with this periodically from time to time.
peace.
PS: oh and here is some links with some information on these films, if you wish to browse further...

Another Godard one I recommend is Breathless. Also, if you get into the 70's-80's Japanese cinema I recommend any of the Sonny Chiba movies from his younger days. GI Samurai and Legend of the Eight Samurai are two greats, the former being really hard to watch in an altered state of consciousness. Still want to try and find the Shadow Warrior (Kage no Gundan) series.

PS: oh yeah, i've heard of Breathless, still haven't seen it yet though. it's one i'm looking into definitely, considering how old it is his "catalogue".
i still wanna see some of the older David Lynch shorts i bet they're on Youtube aren't they?

And as for Sonny Chiba, I don't know that he ever played Zatoichi, but I know he's played Hattori Hanzo in many films, including Shadow Warriors, Kill Bill Volume 1, and I believe Ninja Wars as Hanzo Hattori. Oh, and he was in the Street Fighter films.

No problemo! Yeah, Sonny was actually Uma Thurman's personal martial arts trainer/ choreographer for the Kill Bill movies. I'm willing to guess due to Tarantino's reverence for the guy. A case of Quentin the writer taking care of Quentin the Director

his next film is gonna be blacksploitation afro headed chicks with Katana's and Nunchuks trying to bring down local pimp Samuel L. Jackson; and his front as a corrupt police chief.

I don't care what it is he comes out with. The guy cannot make a shitty movie as far as I'm concerned. But then again he's the first filmmaker, along with his brother in arms Robert Rodriguez, whom I really took notice to. He's also the one that really opened my eyes up to old genre films. I will admit I'm a bit biased, but it's hard not to be when there's somebody that original making movies. Sure he plays around with genres and makes references to pop culture from the past, but he does it in a way that's just freakin' cool!

oh yeah, of course.
Tarantino is the man. dude made Reservoir Dogs, and Jackie Brown, and Inglourious Basterds, and Pulp Fiction, and Kill Bill and those shlockfests with Kurt Russel and the gun leg chick.

he's a quirky mother, to say the least.

Definitely! And for all the fans out there who watch one of his movies and laugh ceaselessly through the whole picture and really dig it, there are always people who go "That guy's so weird! I don't like his movies because you can't understand what's going on!" When you can be loved the world over while having such mixed reviews, you know you're doing something right. My favorite though is the reaction to the "gratuitous violence". The only time he ever really showed violence on a large scale was in Kill Bill in which he was really just having a go at the people who label him the "violence guy"

lols, people and story telling, on the scale he does, do not usually go together.
the people who are into him recognize talent.
the people who don't probably like Star Trek Into Darkness.
which was Abrahms best film yet... but still, goddamn no comparison in terms of talent.
PS: JJ Abrahms was the first name i picked out of my hat, out of all the new school directors. not much compares to the last generation, from this generation of filmmakers.

I still haven't seen much that has inspired intrigue as far as this generation of filmmakers goes. So many people fawn over Judd Apatow, but I just think the guy is a tool. His darlings show some promise, but not through his scripts. The X-Men films are usually worth a watch or two, at least in my opinion. But then again they're the closest to the original cartoon that Stan Lee was part of, which is always worth hours of entertainment. Rob Zombie usually doesn't do bad with his horror throwbacks, but with his new movie about the Broadstreet Bullies, it should be interesting to see him change things up a bit. I am pretty anxious to see how James Merendino's sequel to SLC Punk! turns out. Far as I figure it, as we are due for a socioeconomic revolution, so are we due for a revolution in the world of art and entertainment.

i freakin' hope so. Rob Zombies kitch just doesn't cut it with me. i like his style, but... it's not enough; not enough to fill the shoes of the greats that came before them... i'm still finding older films that are more thoroughly enjoyable then even the best new movies this past decade; safe a very tiny margin.

QFT! There are so many old movies to discover. I've been getting into some of the Brit WWII movies such as The Dambusters, and The Cockleshell Heroes. The French noir films are equally as intriguing. Still haven't had much chance to get into Bollywood though.

Nosferatu (1922) was surprisingly dope I also like Marx Brothers films - even if only one of 'em participates.
