Stoned Kids

Medical marijuana is legal in 20 states and the District of Columbia, but there are still use cases that are very controversial, like medical marijuana for children. Some claim it's a wonder drug for epilepsy, severe autism, and even to quell the harsh side effects of chemotherapy, while others decry pumping marijuana into still-growing bodies. We went to the small town of Pendleton, Oregon, where medical marijuana is legal, to visit Mykayla Comstock, an eight-year-old leukemia patient who takes massive amounts of weed to treat her illness. Her family, and many people we met along the way, believe not only in the palliative aspects of the drug, but also in marijuana's curative effect—that pot can literally shrink tumors.

Brian Cox - "[One] problem with today’s world is that everyone believes they have the right to express their opinion AND have others listen to it. The correct statement of individual rights is that everyone has the right to an opinion, but crucially, that opinion can be roundly ignored and even made fun of, particularly if it is demonstrably nonsense."

It might not be the greatest idea ever to give still-growing children marijuana, sure.
However, what are the alternatives? Many of the other drugs given to these children with aforementioned illnesses aren't much better or, in a lot of cases, are actually worse.

Yeah I don't think it's a good idea to give marijuana or any seriously drugs to people with developing brains unless there is a VERY VERY good reason.

exactly. it seems it's controversial because it alters consciousness in a way society is afraid of. ritalin, aderall, ssri's etc, make you conform and not to mention fuck you up. those have seriously more damaging effects than pot could ever have on a child. not many people seem to talk about that though.

Funny how the title had to be Stoned Kids as if that's the medical definition.

The only reason I study Psychology is to have a legitimate excuse to enjoy Chemistry. :tongue2:

I would say epilepsy is a damn good reason. Many epilepsy drugs are terrible and can have long lasting or permanent consequences. If marijuana has a positive effect I would choose it over many of the anti-epileptic medications. It's a joke if people don't think other medications in that class are not consciousness altering.

Exactly. I have Pancolitis that is under control now but when I was young I was force fed all kinds of drugs. The side effects were horrid and they didn't help my condition at all.

My mom always says she wishes she knew about cannabis sooner so I could have avoided all those other drugs.

I think the side effects of a therapeutic dose of cannabis are going to be a LOT less than most drugs for conditions like mine.

Key words, therapeutic dose.

Funny how no one wants their children on pot but few of them care if their kids are on daily speed and benzos. Oh gotta preform a surgery? Here's some ketamine. And here are some opiates for your pain afterwords. And here's some nitrous for your 8 year old so he can relax while i drill into his teeth. Got to keep those seizure kids off the devils lettuce tho
