Advise for outdoor grow in Colorado

Hi folks,
I’ve been lurking a long time, but haven’t posted much. I had a successful cubie grow indoors back in ’05 with PF tek, thanks to all the info here and a syringe from Sporeworks. Woot!
Now, I’m looking to begin another project. I live in the Colorado Front Range, zone 5. I have access to a Flow Hood, a huge pile of hardwood chips, and a nice shady yard with good stealthiness. I am looking to keep the project simple and cheap - this will be for personal use, so no need for huge yields or rapid growth. My plan is to purchase some spores/syringes of a wood-loving mind-expander, and follow the below protocol:
December - inoculate PC’d rye jars with spores from syringe Jan - Spawn from rye to PC’d wood chips (small size) in jars Feb - Spawn from small chips to regular chips in a plastic bin April - transfer to outdoor bed with more chips Summer - cover with cardboard or other mulch and keep moist Fall - pray
My questions for all the experts are:
1 - P. azurescens or P. cyanescens? (lowest winter temp is around -10, fall is cool but short and precip variable, but i do own a hose) 2 - I have access to agar and lab equipment. should i grow on plates & isolate or just go straight to grain? 3 - Anything I missed, or other suggestions would be appreciated.

Start from a print and go to agar. Skip the syringe. You don't need to isolate, but you do need to make sure you're working with a clean culture. Woodlover prints are generally from wild specimens, so they tend to be dirty.

These are the TEKs I use. They're all as cheap and easy as possible, just like your mom.

But they also tend to be not as bad as you think.Ive worked with lots of wild prints and the funny thing is active wild prints by comparison are cleaner then lost edible prints. Most people who make those prints do a good job.
But i agree, agar to grain to chips. Make the patch with chip spawn not grain or the critters will go bananas for it!! This is a much better course of action.
Both P azure and P cyan should do fine there. Pick a good spot and inoculate on the heavy side. Dont try to make it too big and expect fruits the first year.If you make it too big it will not fruit for 2 years but it can be epic.

Thanks for the info and encouragement. But if contamination is a problem with prints, won't getting a syringe circumvent that issue? Also, seems like all of the vendors are only selling syringes, not prints, anyways...

syringes are made from prints. You would still want to put the spores from the syringe onto agar in best practice.

It is super dry on the leeward side of the mountain. I'd be worried about them drying out or getting too cold too fast. Maybe put up a hoop house with vegetables in it and let the mushrooms seemingly pop up naturally. You can control the humidity and temperatures better using an unheated hoop house.
Just my 2 cents.

I like the hoop house idea! Plus, I can adjust my lawn sprinklers to keep my patch well watered, too. Thanks again, all!

I'd bet the farm these vendors are just doing what everyone does, use wild spores. Unless they can prove to be growing cyans and azures and stuff indoors , which they wont...... plus its damb near impossible I thought . Plus its irrellevant if its clean or sterile as it looks the same under the microscope. And why sell prints when they can make 100 syringes from 1 print .
