Three coir tanks put into fruiting in my greenhouse on Monday, still no signs of pinning
    #19239891 - 12/07/13 08:41 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

My setup: I have a hydroponic dark grow tent (mylar lining) with two ventilation windows covered with hepa heater filter. (seems like overkill but it was the best i could get my hands on and it's a nice tent!) Air purifier and slow fan running by one of the vent windows. Fluorescent bulb through the cable sock. I had a blue bulb in there because someone told me it was good for shroomies but I switched it out for a regular one this morning, worried it was affecting pinning. Zoo Med repti fogger hooked up to a humidistat in there too. Had some problems here at first since the fog was too dense and it was making my three tanks too wet. Im running it a lil bit a few times a day now.

No signs of pinning yet. Vague signs of knotting but no actual dense knots yet. Starting to worry. Anything Im missing? Any way to trigger?

I have a similar setup and I was a little worried at first. It turns out that I get pinning anywhere from 8-17 days after initiating fruiting. I use a casing layer on all of my trays and I've tried numerous different teks. My next 6 jars are going to be spawned straight to coir/verm and I expect similar pinning times.

I've noticed significant changes after introducing adequate lighting and higher temperatures (northern winter). Make sure FAE is adequate too and you should be good.

Wow, thanks. 8-17 days seems so long. They were in the incubation phase after spawning for longer than normal (2 weeks 2 days) and were much further along in terms of colonization than I usually fruit at. I too am in the canadian winter but for some reason in my building they keep the temp at 75F -.- lol. crossing my fingers!

Jars/bags/tubs/trays should colonize @ room temperature getting ambient/indirect light.

Main pinning triggers are full colonization, FAE and Evaporation off of the substrate.

Light is a secondary pinning trigger. For tropical species temperature is not a pinning factor.

P. Cubensis are a tropical species. You could colonize at 70F and fruit at 80F with great results.

Light has been proven beneficial during all stages of mycellium growth. Mushrooms like mammals have a circadian rhythm.

You want ambient/indirect light(on a 12/12 schedule preferably) for colonization and consolidation.

You want direct/intense 6500K light on a 12/12 schedule for fruiting.

Optimal temps are mid 70s throughout the whole grow, but anywhere from 65F-80F is acceptable.

Incubation is outdated/uneeded unless temps in the range stated above cannot be kept.

The inside of the jar is always a few degrees warmer than the outside because the mycellium produces heat..mycellium tends to stall at temps above 86F , and contams thrive.

Fruiting at cooler temps tends to produce denser, meatier fruits, while fruiting at higher temps will often produce hollow, less dense stems.

Mycelium should be exposed to ambient room light from day of inoculation as has been known for many years.  Light is not a pinning trigger until after full colonization and an increase in air is given, and even then it's a secondary pinning trigger.

I used to just pour colonized grains into a tray, case it, three more days in "incubation", then throw it right into the greenhouse for fruiting. That's worked for me in the past, but I've started spawning to bulk, waiting 10 days, casing, waiting 3 more, then fruiting. We'll see how the results vary in terms of yield/sq. foot/week.
