It's amazing

How many big egos are on a forum that is supposedly full of people who are proponents of ego-death.

I concur. The most self centered people I've met nearly all defended the fact that they had no ego. Many of them have used psychedelics at least once by their own admissions.

I can't pretend to know much about enlightenment, but I feel pretty sure that it wouldn't involve ascribing to the ridiculous notion of psychedelics bestowing lifelong or long term enlightenment. For many people "enlightment" on shrooms is theft on opiates shortly thereafter. Many others have no pretense of enlightenment in their trips at all.

"Ego death" is a temporary state of being sometimes experienced with the use of psychedelic drugs or meditation, often one can make great changes within themselves, but the ego is never truly dead. Just absent or sleeping until something wakes it up again.

I'm comfortable with who I am, I don't need to pretend that I'm selfless or deeper than anyone else here.

Don't be so insecure, OP. Learn to accept yourself. :monkeydance:

Not everyone who does drugs is attempting to experience 'ego death'.

The internet is a place where most people let their inhibitions drop away, and let their egos run free. You might even consider an internet forum an ego inflating drug...

I have experienced ego death twice. I consider ego death where your awareness of who you are and what everything else is, is lost.
My experiences were not pleasant. I was in a mass of confusion and once my parents got involved i wasn't sure if they were trying to help me or were conspiring against me. It was quite traumatizing, and to this day occasionally i get minor paranoia panic attacks.

As for my ego today while sober, do i think it was affected? not really.

Once when I did shrooms, I felt terrible for something I had done years prior.

I literally sat there almost in tears, pretty much ruined my trip.

So does it count if you drink to much alcohol black out and wake up pissing in a strange place is that not a form of ego death?

lol, Can't say i've ever experienced that one, so how should i know.
I was explaining what my interpretation of what 'ego death' is. I think the op and many others have a different idea, so i was hoping someone else would define what they consider ego death.

Even if I want to help or "do good" it's all but for me; making myself feel good about it.

Nothing wrong with ego

Not necessarily

And no, nothing wrong with ego.

At least to an extent, in some people anyway.

Ego can be a wall that hampers an open mind though.

Ego always squanders your potential. Part of growing up is to recognise it just slows you down the more proud you get. You have to do it for a different reason.

I dont think you can have "no ego" from tripping. After all my trips with some massive doses of cyans, the enlightenment does last because you remember part of what was going on when your ego was temporarily gone peaking, which expands your mind permanently, but unless you killed almost every cell in your brain im pretty sure you would still have an ego.

Ego death, in my opinion, is the manifestation of intense psychedelia, ie massive stimulation of certain parts of the brain and infinitely increased memory, which slowly increase your awareness around you until your awareness searches for more data to process and finds outer space, and when it has consumed all that is possible, you are aware of nothing because the only way to be conscious of one thing existing is by ignoring the other half of reality. The only way you see a physical object is by air being invisible.

It seems to me all the revelations of tripping are earned by panning your consciousness across time until the waves distort and new datanodes are created in the gaps between the once straight lines. This is where true hallucinations come from...

The realities that you discover were already there inbetween the lines, just that the lines were closer together so just by aknowledging the existence of the lines, you accept that nothing is being hidden by the light gravity warped around it.

Another thing that I find funny is that, for a forum full of psych users who are all about tolerance and acceptance, man there sure are a fuck load of peeps around these parts that are as close minded as it gets. Like how religion enrages them. I mean damn I'm not religious but I don't let it bother me; these fucker's heads want to explode at the thought of someone believing in religion.

Religion is poo. :crankey:

In all seriousness though, I have to agree with you. Part of having an open mind is to be able to discuss something rather than get your back up about it and you would expect better from some people.
