Fuzzy / Snowball Shiitake....

About two weeks old. It's hardwood pellets using lipa's tek. Just regular bags with a hole cut and transpore tape put over it. I'm guessing I need the hole to be bigger, maybe add another one?

thanks

Why are you guessing it needs more holes? Also, did you open the bag to take that picture? You shouldn't do that. Just let it do it's thing, it looks fine to me Shiitake likes to climb the walls of the bag.

Never open a bag to take a pic.
Two weeks is way young for shiitake. It should start popcorning in two more weeks and brown out a month after that.
Be patient my friend.

It almost looks like its popcorning already! It takes a month for mine to look like that. How much spawn was used?

I did like 15 bags. I know not to open them but I was clean about it and don't mind losing 1 bag in trade for answers. I think I used less than a quart per bag. I did Enoki as well and that is slllllow.
thanks guys.

Enokitake is actually pretty fast and should be ready to fruit in 2-4 weeks from inocluation.

Weird, Enoki is usualy fast for me.
About the shiitake, what strain is it? I don't know how big you bag is but if you get weird shaped mushrooms of a very poor yield, try with less spawn next time.
Shiitake Mycelium do grow on the sides of the bags like oysters, it's ok. Let it brown and popcorn for at least 2 month after full colonization, then cold shock it, strip the bags off, wash the metabolites and don't forget to smash it around in the sink to show them that you're the boss here.
Good luck!

Alright, the first one is starting to brown. Out of 15, 5 of them look great. I think the others had trich or some kind of contam as my original grain to grain methods were garbage. That's all fixed now. What's next, wait until they completely brown? Are there any good step by step grow logs out there I missed?
also, one bag has a what looks like a little murder scene. Like red and stickiness. Just a small part.

Red probably is not good.
As for the bags that are doing well try to keep the temperature as constant as you can. Once it is fully browned then it is time to fruit it. Shock it in the fridge overnight or soak it in cold water for a couple of hours. Both have been effective for me to induce pinning.

Is there a shocking temp range? I might just toss them outside so I don't have to rearrange my beer
thanks

I've done that (and for that reason)
Should be fine, even a 10 degree drop can work. As long as they're not going to get frozen solid or anything like that.

Like Forrester said it really doesn't take that large of a temperature drop to induce pinning.

Cool, I'll probably take it from the 80 degree closet to the 60 degree back room.

Isn't 70-80 good? They're sharing space with somethings that prefer higher temps.

The higher temps aren't necessary for shiitake. They'll do fine at normal room temperatures.

For browning, will higher temps actually hurt? Or just not necessary? Never actually read anything about an upper limit, just kinda curious
