I have for a while now been dumping my spent or half spent spawn outside in a 1x1 meter grave full of leeched and re hydrated horse manure with a depth of a bout 30cms lined it with a hessian sack to allow some drainage and I've been watering it for about 2 months
Today i noticed a little spot where something got in, On further inspection i saw 2 small cube pins one half eaten . Is there anything i can do to stop bugs and such I read somewhere that a bowel of beer with stop the slugs but i think its these guys Millipede and Slater bugs
Would an organic pesticide be bad for myclium ? does anyone know or had any experience in outdoor patches?
Any input much appreciated. ~cheers

This was a slug trap that I made to protect my OD patch. By the end of a few weeks, I had so many rotting drowned slugs in it, but it never stopped them from munching away on my fruits.
Almost all of my OD grows met failure.
One of my "successes" was using a wide flower pot, and covered the surface of the substrate casing with pine needles. Slugs are said to hate them, and I did witness more than a few times that they would cruise around the top of the potter, but never go in. Was about the best defense against slugs that I saw....unfortunately that grow then got all wrecked up by fungal gnats.....The second photograph shows what I think were the gnats busily munching away.
Heres some picts showing the details I mentioned:

Appreciate you sharing your experience, as i thought it seems like an endless battle that all OD grows have. I like the idea of the wide planter box im going to do that next
The pine needle idea makes a lot of sense because they are slightly acidic. Thanks man.
I guess all i can do is control the slugs for now i am assuming that is beer in the bottom ?

The reason for the pine needles was that I read somewhere that slugs hate them because slugs are sticky, and the needles will cover them. I dunno what the reason, but I certainly witnessed them refusing to enter the potter on more than a few evenings.
I hear that they also hate copper. I have a family member who uses a continuous strip of copper flashing around the bottom of his planters. Again, I don't know the science behind it, but apparently it works.
As for my slug trap, Yep...just beer in it.

My brother does a lot of gardening and he tells me that the best thing to do with slugs is to kill em and leave there bodies to rot in the area you are trying to protect. Apparently slugs will avoid areas with a lot of dead slugs around. I have no idea if there is any fact to this but, he does grow a lot of tomatoes
