Is it possible to convert the earth into a spaceship?
    #19237252 - 12/06/13 04:14 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Do you think it is possible to organize the earth around it's core to harvest it's energy? What we would have to do to accomplish such a thing? Do we have the technology necessary? What would be stopping us?

The problem would probably be finding a way to propel the earth through space.

That was my first thought too.  Do you want to move the solar system around the galaxy?  Is that what you are thinking?  Have you ever read Ringworld?

I'm guessing we don't currently generate enough power worldwide to change the orbit of Earth, but we do have the technology.

Why would we want to move the Earth?

Apparently the moon is a hollowed out "alien spacecraft" haha, would be cool but I don't know.

just drive the sun the earth will follow
the sun has lots of energy for the job
and we need it's ongoing radiance

If we would move earth out of orbit from the sun, an ecosystem like we have now (/had until now) would nearly be impossible to provide anymore.
I doubt earth alone could have enough energy from its own to propel through space and keep people living on it.
We need that fusion power from the sun, otherwise I guess the earth will soon be burned out.

that's what I said
drive the sun
earth will tag along
we are like part of a flying star anyway

Yes it is extremely feasible. Such a thing is probably a lot easier than fueling a warp drive for very long.

you idiots, don't drive the sun the earth would be burnt to a cinder or flung into space by the 1st or 2nd orbit, jeeze thank god you aren't running this country

which prove that you  gonna get burned

if the sun is true existing thing, then killing it will burn you forever for sure

those moments of illusions you think having now, are nothing to what is obviously there before and after

keep betting on such evil edge of god ways confusing impossible things for any dirty life for a time .. this is what truth is showing anyway, how you cant mean anything else.. where evil is an absolute fact

do you think that true things do not exist ?? that only wills exist ??

I think your onto something with using the energy from the core, lots of people think to use the sun which does make sense but i think somehow using the core or at least heat from lava could be a good idea

I presume you mean an interstellar/intergalactic spaceship? Id watch that movie, yet another idea for 'through the wormhole' to milk another episode out of...

The earth as a human-controlled spaceship? :Awemazing:

In September 2012, the NASA Institute for Advanced Concepts (NIAC) announced the Robotic Asteroid Prospector project, which will examine and evaluate the feasibility of asteroid mining in terms of means, methods, and system

NASA mission (OSIRIS-REx) to return just 60g (two ounces) of material from an asteroid to Earth will cost about $1 billion USD.

On April 24, 2012 a plan was announced by billionaire entrepreneurs to mine asteroids for their resources. The company is called Planetary Resources and its founders include aerospace entrepreneurs Eric Anderson and Peter Diamandis. Advisers include film director and explorer James Cameron and investors include Google's chief executive Larry Page and its executive chairman Eric Schmidt.[They also plan to create a fuel depot in space by 2020 by using water from asteroids, which could be broken down in space to liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen for rocket fuel. From there, it could be shipped to Earth orbit for refueling commercial satellites or spacecraft. The plan has been met with skepticism by some scientists who do not see it as cost-effective, even though platinum and gold are worth nearly Β£35 per gram ($1,600 per ounce). Planetary Resources admit that, in order to be successful, they will need to develop technologies that bring the cost of space flight down.

Another similar venture, called Deep Space Industries, was started by David Gump, who had founded other space companies. The company hopes to begin prospecting for asteroids suitable for mining by 2015 and by 2016 return asteroid samples to Earth. By 2023 Deep Space Industries plans to begin mining for asteroids.

No, I don't think it's possible. i'm not aware of any technology and even IF we could, how do you propose we steer away from the endless incoming of asteroids or not die from drastic temperature/climate changes? I like our proximity to the sun. & our climate isn't half that bad.

I think we're stuck here for awhile, shamefully.

Why not just venture into space and colonize multiple planets

I mean, what if we could contain the core of the earth as a nuclear engine? There is already energy harvested from the core via geothermal energy, but what if we could build around the core and completely contain it as a power source? Is it feasible?
