Light/infrequent smoking?
    #19237102 - 12/06/13 03:30 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Is anybody here a light or infrequent smoker? I enjoy smoking a lot, usually Marlboro Reds. Most of the time I smoke one to three in a day, but usually just one. I have no delusion that I am in fact going to die eventually, maybe or maybe not from smoking  I'm wondering how unhealthy a cigarette a day is? I've been thinking about this a lot lately because I know of people that smoke 1-2 packs a day for decades without experiencing any diseases related to smoking. Obviously any smoking at all isn't healthy, but just how detrimental do you think light smoking is? :cig:

it is highly unlikely that you will run into health problems as a result of smoking one cigarette a day unless you are highly predisposed to lung cancer in which case you probably would get it even you smoked zero cigarettes a day

Thanks for helping me relieve some anxiety. I'm not too worried because I'm going to smoke anyway. I just wonder what other people think about smoking once a day, because all I see are scare tactics surrounding tobacco and I really don't think it's that bad to smoke lightly.

I used to only smoke 3 a day, now I'm at half to a full pack. Good luck.

I've been at 1-3 a day for quite a while. I'm not concerned about smoking anymore than that because I have not let it exceed that and I don't plan to.

No one plans on smoking more, it just happens when one day you slip up. I'll take your word for it. However you probably won't develop grave illness as fast as a pack a day smoker. The possiblity is still there though, don't fool yourself.

Of course. And I know what you mean about ending up smoking more. But I actually started out smoking 3 and now I only smoke one a day, I just don't see myself becoming a heavier smoker. I'm not saying its impossible, just unlikely.

I think the mental health impact of nicotine dependence is widely underestimated.

I'm not saying you are addicted, but if you continue to smoke daily it's a very real possibility that you will become so.

Speaking from personal experience now, I was a 'light smoker' of tobacco for about 5 years, and in the end I was truly addicted, despite smoking only 1-2 roll-ups per day after work. Each day before my first smoke I would feel the cravings build up to the point where they were intolerable and I would have to smoke to settle my mind; relaxing without nicotine was completely out of the question. Being addicted to nicotine puts you in a state of almost constant withdrawal. Every day is an emotional roller-coaster and you depend on the drug for your mental well-being; that is not healthy.

Looking back I can clearly see that my negative emotions were greatly intensified during that period of my life when I smoked. I'm far more mentally stable since I gave up.

I'm somewhat psychologically addicted, I should overall try to cut back even more to maybe every other day or something. However I have stopped for a few days when I didn't feel like buying any and I haven't felt much if any withdrawals.
