Here's an idea for the justice system to help people that have been arrested for drugs.
    #19236294 - 12/06/13 12:14 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

So, drugs are illegal, they're gonna stay illegal for a loooooooooooong time. Sorry to burst your bubble. People will get arrested, people will be judged. Inevitable.

So, here's my idea.

If an addict is caught with drugs, the judge should have another sentence at his disposal. Something I would create called pre-rehab

You can't tell an addict to quit today and you can't force an addict to quit tomorrow. Court ordered rehab has a very low percentage of success.

Pre-rehab would be a mandatory event that the addict should attend at least twice a week. He doesn't have to quit using, but he HAS to attend. The purpose of pre-rehab would be to mentally prepare a person to quit in the near future. Plant the seed in his head that real rehab is coming soon. It would be maybe a 2 or 3 month process that would give the addict a person to talk to, time to prepare, set an official date for rehab etc. All of course leading to real rehab.

It would seem to me that this would have a much higher rate of success than simply forcing someone in rehab against their will.

Do you guys agree?

How would you modify my idea to increase success?

Would you like to see this idea applied?

Are you for or against?
Do you agree with this idea?
You may choose only one

Down here we pretty much have that already.. People who get put on probation for drug related offenses (or those who admit to using drugs regularly) have to attend "classes" for "drug education". They have to attend anywhere from 2-5 days a week, every week for a few months and "graduate". Even have counselors with 1 on 1 meetings (who determine your progress). The only real difference from what you've described is at the end you don't have to go to real rehab.

I don't really see how a pre-rehab would end up being any different in terms of success rates as rehab itself would. An addict is going to remain an addict unless they want to change (and even then they still might remain one). Rehab, pre-rehab, "classes" none of it really matters, because it's all on the addict in the end. The classes can even be counterproductive as it gets together a bunch of drug addicts to teach each other how to "scam the system" and adds extra stress (because not complying with them is a violation of probation and they take a lot of time out of your week). There were people at the ones I was at that struggled every day just to get to the meeting because they don't have their license (a lot of them were there for drunk driving) or their own ride, and there are a limited number of places for these classes, so you can have to drive up to an hour away to get to one.

I don’t want to get back up but I have to so it might as well be today.
Nothing appeals to me no one feels like me, I’m too busy being calm to disappear.
I’m in no shape to be alone contrary to the shit that you might hear.

Idk, i mean, it seems like it would help, but I would assume most hardcore addicts would blow it off.

This is a really silly idea, coming from a recovering addict. A drug addict in the midst of his/her active addiction needs to have a desire to get better. They must have been beaten enough enough to know they can't keep doing the same thing. Once this state has occurred they will seek treatment on their own. The percentage of people who stay sober after rehab is 10% or less. That is because I bet half the people there didn't want to be there, they were forced by either family, job, or the law.

This pre-rehab only gives an addict who wants to get better time to fuck up. I see zero benefits from this

I thought that was called outpatient rehab? It can be court ordered as part of probation or parole. I've been through that shit a few times, for petty offenses.

The shit they spew is rediculous, the woman that was running the group was convinced that after smoking marijuana you're under the influence for 2-3 weeks.

Personally, I have an alcohol problem, and I would see my idea working. Gimme time to prepare and I will go to rehab. Simply because i know it's the right way to go.

I voted yes, but I can definitely see the truth in this as well. At the end of the day, an addict is an addict because they don't truly want to give up. So I do agree with what magicman is saying, however if done correctly an idea like the OP is proposing could actually help users who have a seriously self-destructive relationship with substances.

It'd all be in the execution. So the optimist version of me would say yes and the pessimist would say no.

I'm of the school that if the government is going to get involved in somebody's personal life to this extent, rehabilitation should be somehow incentivized, that the system should use positive reinforcement to encourage addicts to get clean, not negative reinforcement. Nobody should be forced to get off a drug they're dependent on. Everybody in this world is different, everybody comes from a unique background and circumstances that dictate how they interact with the world, and some people are legitimately dependent on a drug where to others not familiar with their situation and overall use would see it as an addiction. It's ridiculous to me that we live in a society where people with good health coverage and friendly doctors are permitted to use all the narcotics they wish (ostensibly for their health) while a poor or disenfranchised person would get put in jail for doing the same things for the same reasons. It's not a war on drugs, it's a war on minorities and poor people.

this is going to be even less succesful than forcing them to go to rehab.
The entire process of treatment is going to take anywhere from 6-12 months already. Most people that have to stick with the program longer than 6 months drop out and take jail time instead. Adding more shit to that is just going to make things worse.

I mean, I like the idea, it does make a lot of sense, but it just won't work.
