do mushrooms absorb?
    #19236068 - 12/06/13 11:24 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

QUESTION:
Do mushrooms directly absorb water/mist/humidity from the air?

Or, do they only drink the water from the cake/substrate?

They absorb water from misting.

They don't absorb humidity nor should they, they need to be evaporating moisture to properly induce pinning.

Since he is talking about cakes and substrates, I assumed he was referring to growing mushrooms. No one mists dried shrooms

I don't know how accurate this is, but based on my experience.
A: Both.
Mycelium appears to be pretty water repellant, absorbing water through a slow 'drinking' action.
Mushroom tissue appears to be water permeable and so needs a humid environment to maintain equilibrium and prevent water loss.  Excessive moisture from misting can be absorbed to give mushrooms a waterlogged appearance and texture.

Mushrooms get a vast majority of it's water from the substrate. If the substrate gets dry, the mushrooms slow and/or stop growing. This will happen even in a very humid environment.

Mushrooms have no skin so they can lose water to the atmosphere very easily. That is why they grow in high humidity (lots of water vapor in the air) conditions. If the humidity is too low the cells lose water faster than it can be "pumped" in and the immature mushroom dries up and dies.

Mushrooms love all the water they can get? NO! Mushrooms need to breath just like humans do, except they do not have lungs. Mushroom cells exchange gases directly with the atmosphere. If the body of the mushroom is submerged in water it is comparable to drowning. No oxygen can be exchanged, anaerobic bacteria (bacteria which do not need oxygen to thrive) build up, and the mushroom is choked to death.

It is almost the same with the mushroom fruit. If it is too dry they lose too much water and desiccate.
