Yeah this is new to me. From what i'm aware of, mycelium does not produce any sort of soil... It produces fruit bodies instead of soil. Why would you want soil anyway? Look outside for that.

I was listening to a talk by paul stamets and he was saying mycelium produces soil. So I guess he was talking about mycelium in the wild and not the mycelium in a monotub:/

Honestly I don't even know what to say lol. From my experience and knowledge I'v never herd of anyone even bringing sumthing like this up so it made me question this thread.

The closest answer I can come to from what your describing is this:
1) yes, he's talking about mycelium in the wild 2) the mycelium 'digests' the food available, it uses this food to produce a fruit body which eventually falls over and dies and becomes part of the soil.
But mycelium doesn't magically fart out dirt. He must have been describing the process by which mycelium processes the nutrients in the soil for future generations of plants and fungi to use it.
Just my two cents. I am not a trusted cultivator and never will be. Just trying to extrapolate from what you've said.

Myclieum does not produce anything except more myclieum,, its method of sporeulation, and metabolites. Myclieum is the actual fungus, like trichoderma. It breaks down decaying organic matter and carbohydrates. Think if you leave bread out, it gets green old. The mold did not produce the bread.

When mycelium eats everything in the substrate up or whatever, it dies. and eventually becomes dirt-along with the substrate. I can't tell you the specifics because I'm not a mycologist or well-read in Biology.

He's probably talking about the Nitrogen cycle, where decomposers like bacteria and fungi recycle nitrogen from plants and animals back into the cycle. Fungi also play a role in the breakdown of woody plant material into things digestible by plants and animals.

Here is my experience to use mushroom myc. to produce some organic soil. I dumped some myc. from the quart jars around a young toona tree this summer. Then covered the myc. with some clay soil. By the Fall some myc. had already partially decomposed by the worms, pill bugs, earwigs, ants and I'm sure lots of different bacteria and microbes munching away the rich myc. while releasing the nutrients. A second experiment I did was to inoculate 5 gal. bucket of straws with a quart of myc. Then buried the straws with the myc. under a veggie row full of compost soil. So from these 2 experiments, one being shallow and the other being a bit deep, one can see that after the myc. die and decomposed back into the soil, this will enable them to become the cycle of life again. I am not sure if myc. will create more soil but for sure my toona tree double its leaves and grow healthier. So if you want to create more soil from the myc. to decompose the layer of straws you are welcome to stack and inoculate them to see. A 4'x5' straws with myc. will do. I'm sure after they die everything will turn into good composted soil for your garden. My plan is to dump all the bad and after harvested mushroom materials into a compost bin to make more composted soil for my garden veggies.

This is wonderful, thank you!

Fungi feed by absorbing nutrients from the organic material in which they live. Fungi do not have stomachs. They must digest their food before it can pass through the cell wall into the hyphae. Hyphae secrete acids and enzymes that break the surrounding organic material down into simple molecules they can easily absorb - this is composting. they also share a close relationship with plants

To sum it up, the fungi in nature helps break down the decaying plant matter on the ground.
Hint, "decomposer" in that oversized chart.

and then to think of how closely the psilocybin molecule resembles seratonin.
