A. campestris on BRF
    #19229618 - 12/05/13 12:07 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Hey all,

I had this posted in the mushroom cultivation thread but probably belongs here...

Has anyone had trouble germinating A. campestris on BRF cakes?

I've had my jars sitting there doing nothing (seriously, no contams or anything...) for just under 2 weeks since inoculation.

I also have the same thing happening with a jar I inoculated with P. antillarum spores to see how that would go.

Any thoughts? Have I missed something?

1 kind soul responded that it took nearly a month for other wild Agaricus sp to germinate on agar from spores...

thanks all

Agaricus, I believe, is a secondary decomposer. You need compost or previously colonized, then sterilized brf jars. Colonized by a primary decomposer that is. I did get crimini spores to germinate on WBS but it took FOREVER.

Correct me if wrong.

Not sure on the other shrooms you got there.

Secondary decomposers should do just fine on a simple substrate like BRF tough, right?

the two times I have tried to germinate A.c. Spores on agar they have been very slow to non-existent.

But yes they do want some form of decomposed material.

Not incredibly helpful but thought I would throw my experience out there.

Well there is one jar that has got some mycelium growing... it's very very very slow though. I'm going to leave it.

There's coprophilous Stropharia rugosoannulata in the same paddock I got the A. campestris from. Just need to wait for the weather till they come back. Now I know that is indeed what they are I'll be heading for them too. I'll see if I can get some other substrate and get the A. campestris going... Maybe some poop/verm mix or something similar... maybe some leached compost from the compost bin outside; leached so it isn't too intense for the spores to germinate and grow?
