Hi! First time growing here and most likely invaded by bacillus Got this thing in the jars that looks like soggy bread or grey fat and very much like the example contam pics:
Haven't smelled it yet as I didn't want to open the lid - will the smell eventually get through the alufoil?
Someone suggested on these forums to leave the substrate for a day before sterilising to get the bacillus to germinate, then kill with heat (much like how you'd do with grain). Would that work with brf? I don't have a PC nor much money atm to buy one, so I steam sterilise. Did that for 1.5h at least, alufoil on, no water got in the jars, left to cool overnight.
It's definitely not the innoc process because I left 2 jars without innoc (my syringe leaked and I didn't have enough left) and they have the same soggy greyness.

If it is a contam is already germinated I'd throw it away for risk of spreading spores it almost just looks like u didn't have the correct ratio did u do 2 parts verm 1 brf and 1 water, did u grind ur own brf adding gypsum( drywall) helps a lot too with colonization speed. and keeps things more fluffy also mix ur Verm and water well then add in ur brf and gypsum. I don't know many contains but it juat looks mushy to me

i would say there are 2 possible causes for this issue:
1. improper sterilization (less likely imo)
2. too wet of a substrate (more likely imo)
if a substrate is too wet on its surface its going to attract bacteria. i've experienced this problem with overly wet grains a few times, leading me to believe this is your issue.
make sure you're following your substrate prep to a T. i myself have never done PF tek, i just started out buying a PC and going straight to grain...so i can't help too much with your substrate prep
best luck
P.S. you don't need to throw away the jars. just open them wearing gloves and dump everything out, then wash with hot water and dish soap. the only jars i ever throw away are ones with molds.

Thanks for the replies! I was using this guide which simply said to add water until it's absorbed by the verm and does not start dripping out: http://www.stonerforums.com/threads/growing-magic-mushrooms-super-easy.20011/ (seems to be down right now so http://web.archive.org/web/20130506114542/http://stonerforums.com/threads/growing-magic-mushrooms-super-easy.20011/) Will definitely add less next time! Is 2:1:1 the best ratio then? Should I make it a little drier just in case?

How many CC's of MS solution did you put in each jar? RR recommends 1/4 CC per hole I think. Too much and you are adding a lot of water to substrate that is properly hydrated.
You certain no water got in during the steam bath?

I probably injected double of that - will keep that in mind next time!
I didn't see any steam inside the jars after cooking but I'll try using a rubber band around the foil next time just to be sure.
One more q: if I got spores from a print and then sealed it away quickly, is the print still okay to use or would there be contaminants among the spores now?

Well spotted But since 'jar' is so much quicker to write, I'm just gonna keep lying
And I have an update! I decided to have a whiff at one of the un-noc'd jars to make sure it's bacillus and not soggy rye flour. Welllll...nothing. It didn't smell of rotten apples, old socks or garbage. After a careful smell, I pretty much stuck my nose in the jar and could only smell verm.
So I waited.
And white stuff started to grow (in the noc'd jars, I mean) O.o
My first thought was that since it looked fluffy, it must be cobweb. Yayyy, two contams not just one! Buuuut...looking through the forums, I think it's a bit too thick and too white to be cob. Here's an image: You won't see it well on the photo but it's snow white like mycelium is always described and it looks like paper where it touches the jar walls.
So...I'm gonna wait again. If it takes over the jar in a day, it's cobweb. If not, there might be hope O.o

Well, both jars are growing steadily now. It's been 2 weeks. Hopefully ready for next phase in the next few!
