Newsflash: I'm in my late 20's, turning 30 in a couple more years. I'm not looking to date young "bro" types or college students who don't have their life together. I'm not looking to support some young student who's still finishing school, I'm looking for somebody who is on the same path of life as I am.

Also, why do you talk like Lil B? Are you a certified gangster? If no, then STFU?

Did you graduate high school with a 98%+ average?  Do you have a 4.0 GPA with extracurriculars right now?  If you answered no to either of those questions you definitely could not go to MIT

I fucked around in high school because I realized early on that if I didn't have the money to fund half it, there's no reason to reach for a high end "prestigous" school. I do have a 4.0 in college now, yes, however no extra-curriculars besides living life. I'm working something like almost 50 hours a week at $8.40 an hour.

If someone guaranteed me a full ride somewhere great as a freshman in college had I simply sucked teachers dicks to get a 4.0 then maybe I would have. As it stands, I was more interested in learning than getting good grades.

A 4.0 GPA is not even good enough for MIT. 4.3 to 4.5 is more like it. I've seen people with 4.0 degrees get denied from Ivy Leagues and UC Berkeley and UCLA.

Cambridge is also just as difficult to get into, essentially Cambridge is the Harvard of England. Like Harvard, it is the oldest and most prestigious university in the UK. Very very few people who studied engineering for their bachelors are able to attain GPA's high enough to attend postgraduate schooling at a school like Cambridge.

I'm not taking anything away from this guy by any means. I realize that he would be of a higher caliber than me, but like I had said I also had other things going on.

Nothing taken away but don't give extra points to people from where they went to school. Though I actually take away points from my peers in CC. They're fucking stupid, let's just put it that way. Too many girls which shouldn't even be THERE in the first place are passing enough to be our RN's. Scary shit really.

If you have a 4.0 in college right now (I don't know if it's community college or 4-year university) you can get a scholarship for graduate school pretty easily.

What a cop-out.  "I could have gone to MIT but I decided it wasn't worth it and fucked off instead"

If you dont have the capacity to make the decision to do something you cant say you could have done it.  It simply isn't your reality.  You could have never gone to MIT because you never had the capacity to make the decision to do it.

It takes more than a 4.0 to get into ivy league, in fact you can get in with less than a 4.0 if you are really impressive in other aspects.

That is true, however that is also a subjective matter. I never had my eyes set on much higher in life than surviving and so to question whether such things as drinking and slacking off at the age of 14 removed my mental capacity to thrive in a place like MIT is, like I said, subjective. It doesn't matter, however, as I was never interested in technology in the first place. Chemical Engineering was my starting major and I said fuck that after a short while. Not because I wasn't capable but because... life circumstances. And so I switched to Psychology and have my crosshairs set high in this field.

Yep. That's pretty much why I'm now playing the game and running the system. I actually just got passed over by my church assembly last week for a $5,000 scholarship, for what I feel, bias in my field. Psych counteracts church, and all these kids saying they're gonna be doctors and build shit in other countries seemed to get the panel's pants wet. Interestingly, one of the students was attending Stanford; Not interestingly, she seemed quite dull, not in the intelligence aspect but the personality part.

Anyways, this isn't about me. We could have this discussion somewhere else on the site about what-ifs in the appropriate forum if anyone's interested. Doubt it.

I personally believe you got a good bro on your hands if he is as you say he is; Graduate school and such. I wouldn't go to a place like Cambridge but like I've said, I make my decisions based on other factors. Live in the present, worry about the future later type.

Good for him on graduating it though. Shit's like 10 years out til that's said and done for me and I'll probably end up studying my grad school in Boulder.

You're killing me man.  Quit backpeddling and making excuses.  The bottom line is that you said you could have gone to MIT and that is simply untrue.  Admit it and stop making up excuses.

Nope. In America we have something called AP, which is advanced placement. Advanced placement is the equivalent of a college level class, and you have to have a certain GPA to even qualify. If you get an A in any AP class, this grade counts as a 5.0. Enough AP classes will get you above 4.0.

And yea I agree with what everyone is saying to James. Everybody "hypothetically" could have gone to such a school had they studied hard enough.

We had AP classes in high school - they were university level classes.  What does AP mean in university?

ap stands for advanced placement. However there are no AP classes for university. The most u can get is a 4.0,the only exist in high school. however, in university you can publish a research paper or a dissertation and that is just about as good as getting a 5.0

OK so I was correct that 4.0 is as high as it goes for university.  My statement was 98%+ for high school grades along with extracurriculars, or 4.0 in university plus extracurriculars for an advanced degree at a school like MIT.

Sure, or something else that sets you apart..  It's not all about grades and SATs/ACTs

A good friend of mine in high-school went to MIT, he didn't have a 4.0, in fact he struggled in math. But he created a science outreach program for inner city kids and petitioned the state to fund it, he wrote up all of the proposals and executed the program before handing it off.  He did a bunch of other stuff that showed passion, leadership, and initiative to the school.

Places like MIT basically want people that are going to move on to impress/change the world. The school's criteria for admittance is more dynamic than either of you are giving them credit for.  That goes for all Ivy's

This is true - you will note, though, that I explicitly stated extracurriculars such as the ones you speak of.

Your argument: 4.0 + extracurricular = acceptance

My argument: 3.5 + Really good extracurricular = acceptance
