Amanita nOOb...ID ?

Experienced shroomer, but new to Amanitas. Found today in mixed conifers on the N.Cali coast. Broke the bulb on the small red one, but it seems likely to be a Muscaria. The remaining ones are in question... I have no intention of consuming, but would just like to extend my knowledge to include the Amanitas. Thanks

Some further elaboration...I apologize for the poor harvesting, it was raining hammers and nails. Likewise, by the time I took the pix, it was raining PBRs !
Top pic : the two on the left were grouped together, the two on the right in a separate group, several feet away. The pale one in the middle was alone, within 20 feet of the same general area.
Bottom pic : this small red one was isolated 30 yards or so from the others, it appeared that there may have been others with it, but they were either picked or eaten by the local fauna.

Are you sure? That one in the middle looks awfully brown, looks like a different species to me!

What does this mean? I know 'aff.' means close to or approximately, I see Alan use this wording on occasion but I've always felt ignorant not knowing what it means...

It means "in the loose sense"; "sensu stricto" means in the strict sense. Technically not the same species as the European mushroom that was given that name first, but it looks the same so we'll call it A. muscaria anyway for now but put a disclaimer on it.

As far as I know the only A. muscaria that is red here on the west coast is A. muscaria flaviovolvata.
That is probably going to change with more research.

Thanks everyone ! Duggstar, the lighter one in the middle seemed somewhat suspect to me, as well.
I'm off to hunt for more...I'll try to get some pix in their natural environ ! I'm just visiting here, just south of the Redwood National Park, from Ohio ! So, it's a very exciting opportunity to hunt this var. locally.

This is the perfect time to be in that area for mushroom hunting. Have fun, I look forward to seeing some of your finds.
