Will you talk to your kids about drugs?
    #19228507 - 12/04/13 07:59 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

ok...got a 3 year old currently...

that being said my parents said nothing to me about drugs...or much else...lmao

anywho...being who we are now...who will we be when our kids reach thier teens?

I've seen pics of my parents when they were younger teen/college age...my mom looked like a saint and my dad looked like a guy that drank alot

no history given from them, but then again i moved out when i was 18...

I say now that I would tell him some of my experiences being careful because...well...it is a miracle i am here (and that he is here at that)and i don't want to glorify it all that much

what say you?

As opposed to what? Acting as if drugs don't exist?

If i see a fit reason to talk about drugs then I will

My kids gonna be fucked either way if I have a son. My grandpa drank and smoked, my dad drank and smoked weed, I drink and smoke weed and take hallucinogens. We have drugs in our dna and I just have to expect it. No words can overpower genetics.

Whatever you don't teach your kids, the world will. So I think some info from dad could be good. It's a tricky subject though if you're going to be honest about drugs and not just condemn their use all together.

I think teaching children that drugs are bad so don't do them is a dumb way to go about it.

They need to be taught the truth. They need to be taught that drugs can be used differently by different people. Some people use drugs as a tool and some use them as an escape and some just flat out abuse them and become dependant. Moderation is important in anything especially drugs

Our societies approach and outlook on drugs needs serious work

I wasn't suggesting he tell them drugs are bad. I was just saying that talking to kids honestly about drugs is hard, because you're going to be telling them that drugs are not always bad, but they aren't necessarily good, they can help and hurt you, etc etc

I don't really wanna have a kids, but if I do, its gonna be a tricky situation. Personally, I strongly believe in moderation. I would be completely okay with my kid trying weed, I very much enjoy smoking on the weekends myself. But, I don't really want my kid to be one of those kids in high school who does absolutely nothing but get stoned all the time. No offense to anyone here who does that:lol: I just personally don't want my kid taking that path, I've got friends who did and they're not doin all that much right now. I also would be completely okay with them trying mdma, but I don't want them rolling ever singly weekend, I also know people pulling that move

I don't have kids at the moment, but when/if I ever do...Yes, I definitely will talk to them about drugs. Of course my thoughts on this can change over the years, but I don't see it doing so much.

As they grow up I'll talk to them and educate them about drugs accordingly...depending on their age, maturity, and the situation in general. Educate them on how all drugs are different. The approach we have these days lumps all drugs into one category of "drugs" (and somehow alcohol doesn't fall into that?). Teach them about safe dosage, what not to combine, ways to test/verify the purity of the drug, and stress moderation in regards to dosage as well as frequency of use. Simply harm reduction, explain to them that I'd highly prefer them to wait until they're older before they touch anything, but if they're going to they should be educated on the matter. Let them know if they have any questions about drugs, or if they are ever in a situation involving "drugs" (bad trip, really drunk or fucked in general and need help, etc) to never hesitate to call me.

As far as keeping my kids safe and "educated" about real aspects of life, I see no sense in avoiding the topic, and/or strictly saying that "no" is the only choice. Of course I'd prefer them not to touch anything until they're older and out of high school, and I feel that proper education about drugs can actually help make that happen.

And again this is all accordingly to their age and the situation. I'm not going to be educating a 5 year old on how much mdma to take for their first time, or to be careful with taking opiates and benzo's together....or telling a 10 year old about my acid trips, and how great mdma goes with it, or how much I think cocaine is over rated. But around or by 12 years old, my kids would likely have a basic knowledge (what they are, what they do, why people use them) of things like alcohol and cannabis, and a wee bit about psychedelics.

Psychedelics specifically....as they get older, if they're interested in having the experience, and if I feel they'e mature enough and ready (likely no younger than 16), I don't see anything wrong with providing them with their first psychedelic so as long as I'm there with them (same thing with cannabis). Considering the situation, I'd only do this out on a camping trip somewhere secluded in nature, where it would only be the kid, wife, and I.

I was going to write a reply, but you have said pretty much exactly what i wanted to. The education in schools on drugs causes more problem than it solves in my opinion. I will defiantly be educating my children.

I would be very cautious about how I would go about it, but I would definitely not keep my kids in the dark. However, there is a wrong way going about enlightening your kids...I have definietly seen the "chill parent" fail at raising their kid.
