I need help with this chemistry question

I'm working on a chemistry test and the question is How many grams of 25°C water would you need to reduce 400 grams of 120°C copper to 30°C? If you could explain to me how to do this it would be greatly appreciated.

Your teacher tried to pull a fast one on you, but I won't let him get you this time.
The answer is zero grams, you just gotta wait long enough and make sure the room the copper is in is under 30°C.
Your welcome.

You need to know the heat capacities of water and copper. Consider where the heat lost by the copper goes and what the final temperature of each component must be.

I understand that i need the heat capacities, I just don't know how to put it all together

The heat lost by the copper is the heat gained by the water, and heat is the mass times the specific heat capacity times the change in temperature. You know the mass of the copper, the changes in temp for each substance are calculable by subtraction, and the specific heat capacities you just look up. Then you solve for the mass of the water.

There you go. Look at the units of the heat capacity. It should be joules per gram degrees. If you know the copper and water have to be the same temperature at the end of the process and you know that the heat lost by the copper must equal the heat gained by the water then you can figure it out.

You'd need to weight each materials heat by its mass and this would be a simple algebra problem. (how many grams times 25c water + metals temperature * metal's mass) / total mass.
Assuming the waters avg temp and the metals avg temp intersect and then even out together.
And assuming there's not anything more complicated to factor in, i.e. limits on how fast energy can transfer from the metal to the water.
I'm too out of practice and too spaced right not to help maybe. IDK.

Yes, the heat transfer is proportional to the mass (C == [E]/([M][T])), but the algebra you have shown is wrong.

Hmmm...anyone else get 7200?
fiddle, I figured it might be... I can do math but I don't know much at all about chemistry, heat transfer, etc. Then again if there really aren't other issues maybe I just suck at setting up math.
