Inoculation by Grain to Sterilized Wood Based Substrate & Ph Questions
    #19223856 - 12/03/13 07:39 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Alrighty,

So I've got some Omphalotus nidiformis - The Ghost Fungus - grain jars that are fully colonized. I'm interested in seeing what the effects of Ph are on glowing strength and general effects on growth. This comes about from Pan. Stipt. having such a difference in it's glowing strength when Ph levels are lowered, and such little info on Omp. Nid.

I'm going to be using alder wood pellets and some larger hardwood chips along with an acid of some sort as my substrate. Since I'll be adding the acid and allowing the grains to soak a bit and adjust the Ph as necessary I figured it would be a good idea to do a full sterilization run instead of just a Lipa style "pasteurization" of the pellets.

Seeing how there's been such a positive response from soaking grains I thought it would be nice to give the grains a soak before spawning to my bulk substrate.

So my questions/concerns are:
  • Since this is a fully sterilized substrate, I really don't think I should soak the grains prior to spawning, correct? Soaking in sterilized water okay? Worth the contam risk?

  • I've recently built a new larger SAB and my sterile technique has improved greatly. I'm still concerned about a grain transfer to a sterilized substrate. Thoughts? I know this can be done, but am I've been frightened by the contamination gremlins for so long now...

  • For the type of acid to use, I was considering HCl, Acetic or food grade Citric acid. I'll be ending up with one bag around 2.5-3.0Ph as a target so a strong acid would be nice. The Chlorine should gas off and the concentrated acetic acid will do...? Any experience from anyone on acid types or suggestions?

Well, Will,  you are growing a fungus that is not psychoactive, medicinal, or edible. There doesn't seem to be a forum for that. Just what are you planning to do with a glow-in-the-dark mushroom that causes great intestinal distress when consumed, anyway?

You're grounded for a month.

Adding that to the months you've already accrued, and it will take you into fiscal year 2015. Perhaps, while you're contemplating your transgression, you could contact the purveyor for advice.

i wouldn't dunk my grains unless i was spawning to a pasturized sub, and g2g in a sab is fine

It doesn't matter what i think of you...all that matters is clean spawn

Damn.

I was really hoping someone would pipe in with legitimate advice in the voice of Carlton. I thought my Phillip Banks was spot on.

Dark I'm makin cool shit happen, that's what I'm doing.

Lets call it a novelty mushroom. It's legit, and this is mush. cult.  a generalized forum, yes?

The G2G from the master to the 7 quarts I have now went fine in a SAB. That wasn't the question it was about grain to sterilized substrate. BUT typing that, I just realize that they really aren't any different. So with that in mind, one wouldn't dunk their master grain jar prior to G2G, as one shouldn't dunk their grain prior to inoculation of a sterilized bulk sub.

Now then, where's Carlton about that acid?

I meant no disrespect, and was trying to use humor to explain why you had to bump your own thread. (Thanks for being patient, btw.) I was just trippin' on your bump.  And, come on. Wouldn't it have been cool if others had picked up on your rhyme?  Glad people started chiming in, since the forum description reads...

It's all good. There really isn't a forum to post on glowies, so I hope the gurus will contribute, even if not in character.

It may be a forum for actives but there is no rule against posting about other species. You will just get better more informed responses about those in the Gourmet and Medicinals forum. I believe there is a thread regarding OP species going on right now in that forum.

Deleted. Didn't read the full response, and the post above was made while I was clarifying my poor own attempt at humor. Apologies.

Dark,
All good brother

I guess I hadn't read the guidelines that closely (hmmm or at all in a looong time) so that's a my bad.

Maybe Carlton is over in Gourmet and Medicinals with my acid answer.

Thanks all!
