Beard Advice
    #19228363 - 12/04/13 07:29 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Hey everyone. I decided to let my beard grow out as long as possible for the winter but I need some help.

It's been about 3 months now, and I've kept it neat by using my hair clippers with guides. The problem is that the longest guide I have is a #8, and it's gotten about a 1/4" longer than that so I can't keep it neat with clippers any longer.

I've looked online for some answers, but couldn't really find any useful information. So my question to you guys is how do I keep it looking neat and shaped when it gets to this length? I have some barber's scissors which is what I guess I should use, but how the hell do I measure & trim it to keep it all even?

Thanks for any help. :strokebeard:

Right on MPD. So am I right to go with the barber's scissors from now on?

On a side note, hope everything is great with you and your family MPD. Haven't posted here in quite a while.

A comb will help keep the length even while you cut.

Thanks fiddle. I was thinking of just buying a set of large different sized combs to act as sort of a guide. Still confused tho as how I would go about going around my whole face doing it that way.

I've been cutting/trimming my own hair and beard now for about 12 years, but I've always just used clippers and guides. So this is a whole new territory of hair for me lol.

yea...or use your fingers in a scissor fashion to hold the hair in place and then cut with actual scissors

this may take extreme patience and a steady hand though

Do the major cutting with scissors when it's damp and do the final shaping when it's dry. Wear it around a while and you'll probably find a couple spots that need a touch up. I wear a pointy goatee and trimming it to a point is a real bitch. I find curved cuticle scissors to be effective and easier to do especially for the final shaping.

Kron what me and my best friend both figured out to do on our own is simply to trim at hairs that seem to protrude instead of using any sort of guide. Razor to trim up the edges and boom :awesomenod:

Oh yeah fuck the guides that shit's whack.  You gotta make a "faith cut" which is like the first cut you make hoping it's not too short then you gotta keep going until it's even all over pretty much freehand the whole time then you wear it a while and trim up any spots that need a touchup but those won't make themselves visible until you walk and move around with it naturally for a while.  Probably shoulda thrown a comma or something up in that last statement but it's too late now I'm already past it.

I just don't trim mine, haha.  Its been 3+ months for me, also.  I'd just shave it off before trimming it.  I've not even trimmed my mustache.  My girlfriend loves it getting in her mouth when we kiss, haha.

Grow the goatee first, and then let everything else grow in around it.
You're beard will look bigger and fiercer but really it's just an optical illusion.
You gotta have some hardware though.. if you're packin' a chin strap half fuzz with patchy, missing spots everywhere well then good luck with that, that's just genetics.

Thanks for the tips everyone.

abltsandwich, I have the goatee now coming to a point. That took a lot of fuck ups over time to get it right. As far as guides go. I always kept my beard around a #2-#4 in the past. It was just easy as hell. 2 minutes with the clippers and I was good to go.

I'm gonna try out the comb and scissors tomorrow and hopefully I don't hack the shit up.

Yea man. I believe it was Zee that was telling me that they don't let you have any facial hair working there. That's just fucking nonsense to me. Except for the middle aged bearded women.

LoL I start to look all homeless and shit after about a month if I don't keep it neat. As long as your girl likes it, that's all that matters tho. I got a thick full beard but for some reason my mustache just bothers me. Always tickling my lip so I keep it shaved completely off as well as shave below my jawline.

I got some fucking thick, manly hair follicles on my face my friend. No patchiness. Like I said it's already at a quarter inch past an 8 guide which is around 3 inches long. Thanks for the advice tho.

This pretty much what I'm going for, and what it should look like this by the end of winter if I don't fuck it up:

I comb my beard first then use scissors to trim it, i run my fingers through it small group of hair at a time until i reach the point where most of the hair stops, about 10% usually grows faster and will make long stragly hairs that stick past the rest. so use your fingers as a guide to cut them all to the same length. go around your whole beard like that. when its long enough you can do it without a mirror.

that makes my beard look alot more maintained while still keeping a natural full beard look.

I usually only have itchyness with a new beard like 1-3 weeks old then after it gets long enough the hairs become smooth and dont cause any itchyness. It probably also has to do with genetics but i would say keep growing it longer and shampoo it once or twice a week and it should grow past the itchyness stage.

I think the itchiness comes from skin flaking off underneath the hair and being trapped up against the skin, and when the head or face moves it shifts slightly against the skin causing an itch.  Or, the skin isn't fully detached yet and is causing the itch, like an itchy scab while it's healing.  The human body sheds all its skin every 21 days or something like that.  Since the skin doesn't stop reproducing its cells, the itchiness never goes away completely.
Best thing to do is exfoliate with a comb rubbing perpendicular to the direction the hair grows with the bristles on the comb, sort of like intensely itching the skin under the hair without pulling the hairs out if that makes sense.  You'll see dandruff flaking off and falling out and it'll itch a lot when it happens.  Then just comb out the skin flakes.
It sounds gross but someone had to say it.

That's all my theory anyway it could be wrong but my moustache itches like a son of a bitch and exfoliation helps a lot.

I dont shave my neck or cheeks i just give everything a trim with scissors but im not even sure what a neck beard really is. I just comb the beard growing from under my jaw opposite direction as the rest so that it stays pointed and good shape.

Dude go wash it with shampoo and conditioner.  Try and massage the skin under the beard with shampoo without pulling out hairs.  Let the conditioner sit for like 5 minutes and rinse with as cold of water as you can stand.  Make sure you get allllllllllllllllllll the conditioner out or it'll give you flakes which also itch.

Should get rid of it almost completely.  When my shit gets that itchy, a wash always clears it up.

I actually just got out of the shower and did that. I condition my beard around once a week. I feel a lot better. I'm just all itchy because Kratom gives me really strong opiate style itching. It's usually all good tho. Thanks again for all the facial hair advice man. I gotta get some sleep but I'll hit you up with +5:mushroom2:'s. Peace.
