The age of awkward graphics 2

That is how I remember the N64 and Playstation generation of games, visually at least. I remember a lot of the graphics being sort of messy and bland even though they were technically superior to past generations aka SNES, Genesis etc.
I guess it's just a matter of style and taste.
as an example, this:

to me just looks better than this:

It's almost like there just isn't enough detail in the world to warrant a total 3D perspective. A Link to the Past looks lush and full while Ocarina of Time just looks messy and barren.
Or maybe my memory is just messed up; I haven't played OOT in a long time while I'm currently emulating ALTTP.

My SNES came with A Link To the Past and it remains in my short list of favorite all time games. Eventually, when I got an N64, I got frustrated a lot with the mechanics of the 3d platform. Ocarina Of Time and Mario 64, among others, would annoy the shit out of me with the way the camera would get into weird places, glitch and go spastic periodically, etc.

You do know that there is a billion of games that are using graphics that look like older games... except with a lot of upgraded functionality, that are out right now?
Look around on steam, there are tons of well rated games that have an older look to them but like I said have some tweaks and things based on improvements made in games. I haven't played any but a lot of them sound really interesting and like I said have good reviews. You just have to look around.

Trine/Trine 2, Bastion, Limbo, Cave story are all excellent. That's the only ones ive tried.
OP I can understand what you're saying but don't use one of the all-time greatest games as an example.

I've played Trine 2 with a friend and I had a pretty damn good time.. Killing him on accident every now and then had me crying a few times.

Yeah, I picked up Trine2 in the summer sale, I'd heard good things but I was surprised by how beautiful that game is.

I miss the old days, I don't know if it was just the childish spirit but video games seemed way funner back in the day. Now a days most games are a choir with pretty graphics.

I wouldn't call it the childish spirit.. That's how anything feels when you experience it for the first time. Of course you are going to get used to it and get more immune to the "wow" factor.

I've been playing a lot of Zelda of late. I just beat A Link Between Worlds on the 3DS last night (basically a sequel to ALTTP) and last month Windwaker HD.
Graphically, I'm with you. The N64 wasn't pretty, but the 3d spatial worlds and totally revamped game mechanics enriched the series greatly if you ask me. OOT may not be eye candy, but it added immensely to the puzzle element of the series, sometimes to a nuisance because you could so easily overlook things where everything from a bird's eye view is so in your face and obvious, but regardless it's still a lot of fun (minus the start as a kid in town intros to teach you the game. I hate that shit, I just want to push start and be tossed in the crux of it )
At any rate, I can play a game like A Link Between Worlds now and appreciate it all again, but I'm not sure they could have gotten away with cranking out more of the same shit back then... OTTH, musically ALTTP drives me fucking nuts, I hate hate hate the overworld theme particularly.... with every advancement, Zelda's music has gotten a little bit more tolerable.

i find that 2003-2006 was the worst time for graphics and game engine design/tweaks in video games. i mean, look at Unreal 2 or Far Cry... great games for the time, but horribly awkward feel and look to them. there was alot of games like that, i find, which lead me to stop playing alot of games for awhile.

hmm, i took about a 5 year break from gaming between '98 and '03 actually and I didn't feel like I missed out on much.......
but between '03- '06 i remember games like world of warcraft, gears of war, knights of the old republic, soul calibur 3, prince of persia: sands of time, fable, psychonauts, the elder scrolls oblivion, okami, the legend of zelda: twilight princess... wasn't all that bad for me really.. and just recently played wind waker for first time which was released in '03 (granted the HD version, but still i really liked the animations for the game which were unchanged, just resolution bump)
wasn't all that bad for me really

Oh I know. I was blown away as much as everybody else. The two games that had the most profound effect on me as a youngster were Ocarina of Time and Metal Gear Solid for Playstation.

They're still great games. The gameplay is timeless (In all this I'm only really referring to the graphics). They ushered in a new era of games but have since been surpassed. Maybe that's the crux of the matter. The SNES and Genesis were sort of the pinnacle of the 2D home console era whereas the N64 and Playstation were the beginning of a generation
