Humidification by perlite/spraying
    #19225245 - 12/04/13 03:35 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Hi, i'm new on this forum. Well I'm sorry, maybe my question have been done many times. Anyway, my fruiting chamber (i followed RR chamber), has a humidity of 60 % max. I putted in something like 3-4 cm of perlite, i mist manually the walls and i have a fan from a old computer on the top that does its work 15 min every 1 hour. Even if i disconnect the fan (cause i thought that fanning produced low humidify ranges) the level is stuck at 60 %. i did dunk and roll. Sorry for my english, hope you'll figure it out. Thanks

Stop misting the walls of the chamber and start misting the cakes directly with a fine mist until they glisten, then fan out the chamber.

Mist them again once that water you misted before has evaporated. (at least twice a day)

Get rid of the fan, get rid of the hygrometer, as it is useless in a properly built SGFC, and will only fuck with your head.

You need 4-5 inches of moist perlite, so that would be about 8-10 cm in the bottom.

You need 1/4"(6mm) holes every 2 inches in a grid pattern on all 6 sides....then the chamber must be raised so that air can pass up thru the holes in the bottom and up thru the perlite.

It must be in a room with no running fans, preferably towards the middle of the room.

Do this and your humidity will be perfect no matter what a cheap hygrometer says.

thanks really much. i'll follow it properly. beside the holes on the bottom, there's already perlite in it, damn. we say, falling down you learn to walk..that's the way.. I had a low temperature before, was around 19-20° C, winter is cold in Perugia. Now i have a higher temperature, around 23°C and saw a better grade of humidity. yeah, i thought that cheap hygrometers gave bad results at high points of humidity. But i have a question, will be glad if you can answer. When the mycelium will come up, then the mushrooms, do i have to spray directly on them? I' ve done dunk and roll for the first time, and i thought that the layer of 'dry' verm will be covered by the mycelium..and if it's true that spraying on it would create other conditions to manipulate and control, didn't want to complicate things.

Yes, in a SGFC we mist the substrates/cakes directly, even when fruits form.....they are 90% water....they love showers.
