Short Mushrooms

I heard of someone whose mushrooms are growing about only an inch tall before their veils are opening up. This is the 2nd flush of mushies from a casing using Verm and coir substrate. The first flush yielded some nice mushrooms under the conditions: 95-99% humidity, air pump/fanning,misting,light, temp-72F. These conditions have been maintained, but the growth is not as impressive this time. He was wondering what might be the cause of this and what is he able to do to correct it. He believes the cause may be due to a lack of nutrients but he wanted to get some advice being this is his first time. I want to apologize for this post which is closely related to a few others. He just wasn't able to find the answer he was looking for elsewhere.

Cronc assumes he's just trying to prevent the fuzz from tracking this massive grow he has started, and address him accordingly lol

What did you inoculate with? Syringe? agar wedge? print?

BRF cakes were inoculated with cubensis B+ spores via a syringe. The cakes were sliced and cased.

I've learned this the hard way: Spore syringes are what people in this forum refer to as a "crapshoot". Essentially, you're rolling the dice with genetics and contam issues. This isn't to say, however that other factors would not contribute to your particular issue, but from what I've read, and experienced, spore syringes can be rather disappointing. My mediocre advice would be to get into agar; it's relatively inexpensive, and if you're clean and follow proven teks, you might just get something worth preserving for future grows. There are a lot of good people on these forums with great information so don't be afraid to listen, but always research and use common sense. Good luck

I agree. You shouldn't slice your cakes unless you're feeling lucky and decide to cut off a bacteria contam and push for a flush. I wouldn't recommend this.. but some do it.

Yeah, being a newb and all I decided to go the syringe route. I currently have another casing which I just placed into the fruiting chamber today so hopefully I'll get some robust individuals to take prints from. Definitely going to make changes to my method next time around. Also, why no slicing?

I think the answer to that question is another question: Why slicing? I see no advantage to doing this. Why would you want to remove any portion of a colonized cake? If you applied a dry casing layer per the PF Tek there should be no modification to your cakes whatsoever. When they have colonized completely, consolidate for at least a week then moisten your dry verm layer and move to SGFC.

even with bacteria, just give it a few minutes of direct sunlight everyday and let the cake dry up a bit after it flushes and it will normally go away

ther's no real benifit to crumbling/slicing your cakes and adding a casing layer, either spawn them to bulk or birth them, dunk them, rinse them, roll them , fruit them
