The greatest human achievement ever?
    #19226442 - 12/04/13 12:29 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

If there's anything in this world that you would find the label of "The greatest human achievement ever" to be fitting for, what would it be?

The yin and yang of nuclear fission. That shit is seriously impressive. First of all, figuring out that it could be done, when everything they studied was absolutely invisible, and then harnessing it in mindbogglingly impressive manners. Whether it be in bombs that could mark our very existence or energy generation that could perpetually preserve our existence.

Metacognition came first to my mind.  Along with science, particularly the theory of evolution by natural selection and the subsequent reduction of god's purported sphere of influence.

Basically, philosophy.

squatting is actually a much healthier way to poop--it's how our bodies are physically designed--the sit down toilet causes the defecating human to assume a narrow anorectal angle--which is obstructive and causes difficulty in emptying the bowels.

sit down toilets; giver of hemorrhoids and colon cancer!

indoor plumbing is aight tho

First thing that came to my mind though was the eradication of smallpox. That was super awesome.

But I think the greatest achievement, and we're only beginning to see the very start of it, is the Internet.

The Internet advances individuals, societies and humanity alike at an ever increasing breathtaking speed.

Think of what you owe to the internet.

Spoken language trumps written language.

Spoken language taught us to communicate and moreover to think in the abstractions of words. If one invention made everything possible, its language, period.

I'd say, the GREATEST achievement humans ever did as a race was learn to speak.

Communication is critical to our survival and speaking makes that possible.

Agriculture is pretty fucking incredible if you think about it:

Instead of looking for what we need in nature, we just make and reconfigure nature to get what we want.

Unfortunately, agriculture exacerbated the hierarchical crap that's now causing all these problems for so many now.

"Well I don't agree with your lack of agreement," says NASA oceanographer, Gene Feldman.

Quote:

Why don't we know more about the oceans?

It's really a hard place to work. In many ways, it's easier to put a person into space than it is to send a person down to the bottom of the ocean. For one thing, the pressure exerted by the water above is enormous. It's the equivalent of one person trying to support 50 jumbo jets. It's also dark and cold. Unlike space where you can see forever, once you're down in the ocean you can't see anything because your light can't shine very far. It's a challenging place to study.

In space of you don't see forever there is nothing to see.

I didn't say it was easy.  I said it wasn't done because it wasn't sexy.  How much money was spent on each?  If we spent as much time and money on the deep ocean we'd know it inside and out and thousands of people would have gone.  Just not sexy enough

My bad... I didn't read all this thread before I replied.

I only read the first page of that article (maybe read rest later; tryna get work done), but I didn't realize those other disadvantages of agriculture; we've all been so trained to regard it as ultra-efficient.

At the time, there was a lot of pressure to succeed in this mission at the time. John Kennedy had been assassinated, the Vietnam war was going on, everyone was dropping acid... the political powers at be needed this to be success.

Basically they launched a spaceship into a low earth orbit, and filmed everything from there.

Some compelling points:
1. They LOST the fucking tapes! What kind of happy horse-shit is that!!? Did they tape over them with a Charlie Brown Christmas or something?
2. There is no way that the film they used would stand up to the absolute-zero temperatures on the moon. Think of plunging some old film into the cold of liquid nitrogen. At best the chemicals would freeze; at worst, it would crumble to dust.
3. The "C" rock, the lack of stars, the double-shadows.. the impossibility of passing through the Van Allen radiation belts (without shielding)... where does it end?

The Mythbusters fired a laser at the moon, bouncing it off onew of the mirrors left on the lunar surface and collected photons of that light in the appropriate time frame.

It happened.

surprised no one has mentioned agriculture.

that's because it's the worst mistake in the history of the human race

Oh god.

:whatever:

My bad... I didn't read all this thread before I replied.

I only read the first page of that article (maybe read rest later; tryna get work done), but I didn't realize those other disadvantages of agriculture; we've all been so trained to regard it as ultra-efficient.

Its filled with cherrypicking, bullshit, and misinterpretation of available information. for the article: TLDR Hunter-gatherer society was awesome, and agriculture was the cause of how society treated women.
When in actuality both barbaric and sexist cultures exist in both foraging societies and farming ones. The switch to agriculture decreased the variety of people's diets, but this is because of what people chose to grow, not what had to happen. Over time the switch to agriculture led not to abundance, but to stability. stability is where you get good things.

Spoken language, technology (mastery of tools), written language.

Wonder who the dude that figured this out was... Maybe it was a woman?

Either way their name was probably "ugg-mugh-tuk" or something fucked up like that. I love Ugg-Mugh-Tuk for discovering how to create fire.

The biggesst human achievement has always been the lataset discovery.

Every day we surpass our previous acheivements.

We should be proud as a species that we are able to constantly grow and move forward.

The human brain is the biggest human achievement that will ever exist.

Spoken language taught us to communicate and moreover to think in the abstractions of words. If one invention made everything possible, its language, period.

But written language allowed for knowledge to be accurately passed from generation to generation which is essentially what allowed us to advance to more knowledgeable states
