They took no shit, but the colonies were basically the governed's equivalent of moving into the dorms... much easier to tell mom and dad fuck off that way
Really shows how we let our government swell into a Hobbes-ian leviathan.
That's really interesting too. Thanks for sharing!

The circumstances were drastically different during those times. Britain had to sail supplies and people over an ocean. Also, it wasn't like the entire population stood against Britain. Probably 40% wanted a revolution, 40% didn't want a revolution, and 20% didn't care. Once Britain started fucking up peoples farms that 20% started to care.

This is something I recall from a college history course I took in 2010. After looking for a source online I now remember that the professor actually stated 1/3 supported revolution, 1/3 did not, and 1/3 were indifferent. So it's more like 33.33333333333%
The actual percentage is widely disputed, so you can google all you want and find different claims, but I think you will consistently find that less than half of the population was in support of a revolution in the beginning.
The following is an exert from Wikipedia (I know, not the most academic resource)...
"In 2000 historian Robert Calhoon said the consensus of historians is that in the Thirteen Colonies between 40 and 45 percent of the white population supported the Patriots' cause, between 15 and 20% supported the Loyalists, and the remainder were neutral or kept a low profile"

From the way the thread title is worded I'm guessing that the 2% is supposed to be the amount that the existing tax was increased by.

Actually, the Boston Tea Party was a response to the Tea Act, enacted by British Parliament in 1773. It was actually meant to bail out the East Indies Trading Company...effectively a colonial times corporate bailout. In reality, it made tea way cheaper in the colonies...like 40% cheaper, or some such. The colonists that stormed the ships weren't angry about tea getting new taxes at all.

How can we celebrate July 4th as Independence Day when at the time, slavery was still fully accepted in America and racism was universal? How can we be proud of that?

Lol OP, it was a little more complicated than that.
I don't think we're scared, but complacent sure. I think that really, the overwhelming majority are well off enough that they just don't care. They hear about one of the hot button issues and get riled up, maybe go to a rally. They get pissed off about taxes when they get their paycheck; but they still make enough to buy their new xbox, so who the fuck cares?
Revolutions happen because people see the king rolling around in a new gold carriage while they are forced to eat shoe leather, not because of budget differences in the legislature of a few percentage points.

for one, racism was widely accepted everywhere in the western world. white supremacy could be equated to copernicanism in the middle ages. and while i think everyone should know our history warts and all, one thing that sticks in my craw is how spain is generally overlooked in discussions like this. those motherfuckers were brutal. the 17th - later 20th centuries were fucking bloody all around.

Yeah I guess it was a bit off topic, but still, the revolutionaries of the American Revolution had slaves chained up back home while they were out shooting Brits.

Bullshit the Boston Tea Party didn't cause the American Revolution. There have been plenty of rebellions since before the tea party, a notable one being the burning of the HMS Gaspee.
