reintroduction of tazmanian to the wild ?
    #1922519 - 09/16/03 07:50 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

my freinds dog has some tazmanian strain cubes fruiting in jars with sandwich baggys over them over time the bags turn almost back with spores. does anyone think one could rinse the bags with distilled water then bottle up a bunch of spore water maybe half a gallon. then add it to his neighbors horses watering trough would this possibly start the mushrooms growing wild i live in north georgia and cubes don't grow naturally around here i've looked.

I really have no idea, and am not all that knowledgable....but that sounds like an interesting idea thats worth trying. It might be more succesful with cows though.

Why don't you just make a spore syringe and innoculate the horse manure?

i have read animals need to consume the spores in order for shrooms to grow from their manure unles it is pasterized and spawned with mycellium

wouldn't it be great if this were to work my freinds dog could retire his pressure cooker and let the horses do all the work also he could live without having to worry about law enforcement giving him a hard time

you could try inoculating the horse shit with the cake once its done fruiting and that might speed the whole process up

Where'd you read that then, uneasyone? I don't think that's really the case; shroom spores can colonise horse/cow dung without having passed through their digestive system, but it's been suggested that in many cases existing mycelium colonises poo as it drops on top of the soil it's growing in.

However, because of the way the digestive system of large herbivores differs from that of, say, humans, it doesn't hurt the spores when they pass through.

I dunno man it sounds like a long shot, i really dont think it would work, if u were to start some outdoor patches in this field i think after a while the mycelial networks would possibly spread throughout it. i think thats ur best bet of creating a shroom field, IMAO

put it on the horses hay, that'd prolly work better to ensure the eat the hay with the spores instead of the water maybe settling and the spores go to the bottom before the horse can drink them. that's what i'd do if i had horse or sow.

you cold always lace some water and feed it to some horses, then when they poop, just move the poop to somewhere you can keep an eye on it. if it doesn't work you can always use it later

heh, the horse method is viable in a way, but i think the best bet in hoping to propagate a natural species is to help it along.  Simply start an outdoor bed using some cakes and straw/poo/compost.  Let those fruit til maturity and let mother natures wind do the rest for you.  It's not a 100% guarunteed success, but there's a shot it could work.
