Tub colonization and jars help!
    #19224589 - 12/03/13 10:03 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Alright, so im having a little issue. First off, my tub has been colonizing for 15 days and it seems to be stalled at this point. its been this way for 5 days. As you can hopefully see from the last picture, there are water droplets on the edges in some places, and theres a few pins popping up! What am i doing wrong? The room is also at a steady 65F, is this too cold? (my space heater broke just in time...)

As for the jars, they have stopped colonizing at this point. theres about 2% uncolonized at the very top. Can i go ahead and spawn these anyway? i have substrate pasteurized and ready, so id like to spawn them immediately if possible!

Let me know what you guys think asap!

edit: also, is it safe for me to open the tub temproarily so i can take a better pic? or will this jumpstart fruiting slightly? i already have some pins so im concerned!

i want to say its about 50%, but this is my first tub so im not sure exactly how to guage it :/

edit: shit sry i misunderstood the question. its 1:2 ratio spawn:substrate. i have 2 quarts spawn to 4 quarts coco/verm

15 days is insanely long for a bulk sub to be colonizing, opening it will not istananeously trigger fruiting, open it up and give it a smell

and snap a pic of the surface

yes they are, and i pasteurized using franks method to a T

i just opened the tub, and it smells like perfect fresh mushrooms! But i did notice that the water problem is way worse than i first thought. the substrate is soaked!!! Any idea what i can do?!

also its hard to see, but theres quite a few pins growing :/

edit: the whole thing is colonized just as you see at the bottom. its just so wet that the light in my room caused it to flare

:whathesaid: If your seeing pins, I'd be happy and put it into fruiting right away.

Damn alright then! thanks guys.

i guess i just figured it HAD to be 100% colonized before fruiting, and this doesnt even look close to me. But i guess well see how it goes! and if it fails, i have another tub in the works, and 12 jars colonizing through G2G! (G2G jars colonize SO fast omg!!!)

Take a small brad (a little nail) and get it red hot, and poke a small hole through one of the bottom corners of your fruiting chamber.  As the substrate shrinks, water accumulates on the walls of the chamber, than rolls down under your substrate liner...then out through the iddy biddy hole in the corner.  I keep mine on the high side, and drain IF necessary.

If the sub is too wet, you can look at removing one of the UPPER poly-fill holes.  This may allow for faster evaporation, and may keep your substrate from contaminating.  Wet is no good.  It is inviting of molds.

did u use a top layer to cover exposed grains? might explain the pinning

yes and no lol, rr reccomends a top layer due to grains drying out causing the mycelium to go dormant but as of late most have stopped using one due to early pinning problems
