Psilocybe azurescens spawn propagation question
    #19221688 - 12/03/13 11:34 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Guys I'm planning to kickstart an azurescens garden this coming fall.  To effect this I plan to use this winter to propagate spawn, then in sprimg make a few beds and hopefully harvest in fall.

The stage I'm in now, I have 2x 2 liters of fully grown azurescens spawn on beech sawdust, and just mixed them into 2x 6 liters fine soaked leached beech chips, each in a 10l bucket covered in plastic, at room temperature.

So, 1 spawn to 3 chips for a total of about 16 liters.

My question, will this be ready before spring?  If by a wide margin, might I be able to do a second run before spring comes 4 months from now? (for instance 16-->60 ltr) If consensus has it that its best I expand to 4 buckets right now (so 1:6) I''ll do that.

What I want to go for, if possible, is 2 sqm worth of beds or more.

I don't think it would be wise to do a woodchip to woodchip transfer if that's what you're intending.  Since it's in a bucket it won't be sterile, so if you transfer it you're taking a big risk when it hits the freshly sterilized chips.

When I put in my patches, I made the grain spawn in the fall, and then inoculated bags of sawdust over the winter.  In spring, they were fully colonized and used to inoculate the outdoor chip and bark beds.

True, but in this case it's sawdust to woodchip...you're right though RR, the OP aught to pasteurize those woodchips for indoor colonization.

If you pasteurize and drain well you should be good to go for winter indoor colonize. I find temps between 65/70 f to be good for woodlovers. Air holes should be covered to prevent insects.

I would suggest colonizing the chips until spring and making a mother-bed, from which, after its colonizing well, take handfuls and start other beds.

Good luck.

I go grain spawn to chips outdoors in flowerpots .I dont bother sterilizing or pasturizing chips when I am growing outside, its unnecesary. Azure myc is so vigorous and outside no trick or cobweb bother you.
The only issue is rats go ape shit for Psilocybe grains so I stack my pots and wrap wire mesh around the bottommost pot.

I may not have a trusted cult tag but believe me I have done this with P azure, P subaeruginosa, P cyan, P allenni, P weraroa , P ovoid, P serbica and Stropharia rugosoannulata with success. All of these species, besides P serbica I think, is a hardcore primary decomposer , you cant stop this mycelium, it wants to grow.

To answer your question, you will have enough to make a patch I am sure. Just dont go over board and make a small sized patch the first year if you want to get fruits in 6 months.
And to help get fruits in 6 months, I suggest using what I call myc hearts. Keep a solid pot or bag or bucket and dont break it up, dig a hole in the ground in the middle of where the patch is going, and put that solid block in the hole. Then make the patch the regular way mixxing chips and chip spawn over top of the heart. It will fruit from the heart .

That bonsai in my sig was straight grain spawn to rain soaked chips , made in March/April , fruited in September.
